Are Zeus and Jupiter the same god?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Or are they distinct gods with similar attributes and myths?

Jupiter is basically Zeus in that the Romans saw what the Greeks were doing and stole it. But he evolved a different character based on Roman culture, so as gods they have a few different attributes. The Romans did this to a lot of gods. For the purposes of modern casual reference, they're basically interchangeable.

I think they are different, but that is speaking from a perspective of being very interested in history of religion. From a pop culture perspective and in many respects (such as their attributes and common depictions) they are similar figures and can be considered interchangeable, sometimes they were considered interchangeable in antiquity. It really depends on the context of the question.
