Reddit recs comms are useless. People rec the same 10 titles over and over, for any request. Fantasy books, anime, otome isekai, kdramas, you name the comm, it's prevalent everywhere. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss was recced in every thread when I participated in fantasy books comm. It's ridicoulous circle jerking of people upvoting each other, posting the same lists under the one request. Sometimes the rec goes with 'it doesn't exactly fit but The Name of the Wind is great.' Arfgh. And it's not like MMOs which we have a limited number of active ones.

I know. All rec requests are useless. People just rec their favourites, regardless of how good a fit it is. I lost count of the amount of places I've asked for trad heroic fantasy books, with no dumb twists or subversions of the genre, and all I get are dumb twists, subversions, and urban fantasies, because that is all that people are reading right now. That and a lot of real stretched justifications as to why, despite me not wanting them in the slightest, I was actually wanting them recced.

It's not just books either. (Not quite as much these days but there were times when RPGnet's new hotness of an RPG would get recommended for ANY scenario...)

Agreed with the other posters, rec threads always suck. No mater how much you insist you don't want a certain thing, even in ALLCAPS, THERE WILL always be several people who still rec that exact thing because they're just so convinced everyone must like what they, the main character, likes that it's completely irrelevant what people actually ask for.

See the Hivemind thread below, the OP asked for Midwest and got recs for the Mountains, for Canada, and for the goddamn South. People just don't read.

I found that under those posts if you sort by "controversial" you can find some pretty solid gems. I discovered some of my favourite horror movies thanks to that.
