In my youth (early to mid 200s), there was a lot of screeching about TV giving girls unrealistic body image expectations. Even at 12 I thought that was moronic and not giving young women enough credit.

What I will resent to the end of my days is the constant implication that cool girls only used tampons. That shit got in my head.

Yeah. I heard that one too. Kinda gross, but sadly to be expected given the prudery of the nation.

Not necessarily. I remember it being the "mature" girls, the ones you were supposed to admire. Sometimes they were bad girls, but not always.

Just to clarify, I was afraid to use tampons and it made me feel like an immature baby. Like the fact that I was bleeding out my vagina wasn't enough proof that I had some grown-up credit.

I feel this, OP. Due to my endometriosis, tampons were painful. I could only do pads.

even though wearing pads can feel super gross, the thought of something soaking up blood and just sitting inside my body grossed me out so much more. i'd rather it be outside of my body. i also knew someone who lost a tampon and that freaked me out. i think she had to go to the gyno and have it fished out with forceps or something. not fun.

okay as someone who has been using tampons for more than twenty years

how the fuck do you lose a tampon? the vagina isn't that deep??? it's not like it's a black hole or something, stuff can't just go in there and disappear

If the string rips or you push it in alongside the tampon it can get pretty hard to get it out again, especially if it's soaked full and you can't get a grip because stuff gets slippery? Never happened to me but I imagine that's one of the ways it could happen.

okay, see, that makes sense. it was the use of the word "lost" that threw me for a loop because like... there's not that much space in a vagina, if you reach in there you're going to find it.

NAYRT but yeah, I'm not so much grossed out at the idea as fairly sure I would manage to hyperfocus on something long enough to forget I was using a tampon and fall ill with toxic shock syndrome. Because I'm already forgetful; add a fun project or new obsession and I'm in big trouble.

When I was starting puberty and learning how to deal with periods, warnings about toxic shock syndrome were everywhere. By the time I was in college the narrative had switched to toxic shock syndrome is literally not even real, we just thought it was because everyone is afraid of tampons, so put the tampon in and leave it there till your period ends you pussy. Glad I was still too afraid to listen to that one.
