I don't understand why any woman would even be a republican.

Ignorance, I'd guess. Or genuinely believing the leopards won't eat their face.

Look up the book "Dying of Whiteness".

Because they hate other people more than they love themselves.

Have you ever asked one of them why?

would I be guaranteed to get an honest answer?

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're really ever guaranteed to get an honest answer from anyone. But if you want to start to understand why someone identifies or believes the way they do, asking them is a good start.

Did greghousesgf say she wanted to understand? Frankly, I can guess, and I don't want to get dragged into a conversation with someone with those toxic beliefs.

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I... don't think ayrt was ordering her to ask questions.

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say anyone was ordering anyone? But asking if greghousesgf had engaged this person in further conversation and pointing out that this is the way to understand them is a bit weird when greghousesgf hadn't expressed any interest and who can blame her...

No one's under any obligation to engage in politics, but when enough people have the attitude of, "I'm not going to talk to or attempt to understand people with different views from me," folks start getting entrenched in their beliefs, and progress starts stagnating. You can't get people behind the kind of policies and changes you want if you permanently write them off; you have to actually talk to them.

I doubt they would even know.

Can't know unless you ask them.

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have. I grew up in a very very red state. They just repeated talking points back, so either they're lying or they don't know and are just parroting what they've heard. I'm being generous when I say I doubt they know.

nayrt - This has been my personal experience as well. No need to sniff garbage to see if it stinks.

Same. And I used to be one of them, until I learned better. That was what I was taught growing up (not the entire Republican line, but a huge chunk of it). And I was never given the opportunity to listen to other points of view (and was told very skewed versions of other views) until I was in college.

A lot of them don't know better. But a lot of them don't care to learn any better either.

I have. Her father told her to.

Ugh.

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Pfffft, who cares. You're unlikely to get an intelligent, thoughtful answer, and who needs garbled hategroup talking points regurgitated into their face?

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
People who are interested in actual political and cultural change, that's who.

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Self-loathing and internalized misogyny, probably.

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Arrogance. Think they're the good women because they LIKE being all the things Republican men want them to be. They like staying at home, they'll never have to work and face harassment in an office, they'll never have an unwanted pregnancy because they like having as many kids as possible, and so forth. And there's nothing inherently wrong with liking those things. But they think it makes them better than the women who don't, is the problem, and people love to feel superior and make their personal choices a moral superiority badge.

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-18 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
And when they get harassed at church or have medical complications with their pregnancy or someone in the family becomes disabled, they have no way to cope because everything they’ve ever been taught says those things only happen to heathens that deserve it. That’s when the conspiracy theorists swoop in to reassure them that it wasn’t their fault and that they’re really just the victims of George Soros’ team of gay doctors and their 5G vaccines.

I was a proto-republican once. then I learned no one cared that the leadership was literally insane. I could not support that kind of exploitation.

Re: Annoying things people do

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I dabbled in conservatism briefly as a teenager, but that only lasted until I moved to a red state in high school and saw those policies in action. Modern Republicanism is a cult in the truest sense. Their leaders spend so much time fearmongering about "urban liberal hellscapes" and demonizing anyone politically to the left of Newt Gingrich because unquestioning fear of alternatives is the only thing that keeps the GOP's brand of theocratic extreme capitalism alive.
