I just watched the new Sailor Moon Cosmos movie and I'm conflicted. I was super hyped up about it, and it was fun to finally see the manga version of the ending on screen, but although it did away with some of the forced inter-senshi conflict nonsense the anime version cooked up to prolong its runtime, I think the reveal of who Sailor Galactica and Sailor Chibi-Chibi are in the anime was better.

The manga makes Galactica into just another generic villain and Usagi into... Jesus? Idk, I just don't dig it. I don't hate it (if shounen heroes get to be reincarnated gods capable of blowing up the universe, sure, shoujo heroes should get to be wildly OP wish-fulfillment engines too) I just prefer where the anime went with it.

Also, and I know this has as much to do with the anime having so much more content than the manga - which is surprisingly short - I prefer how much better-characterized the non-Usagi senshi are in the anime, how they have their own arcs and desires, while in the manga they're a one-note supporting cast for the main character.

I guess while I'm on it, I'm also kind of surprised Takeuchi canonized the other sailor senshi not being the princesses of the other planets who had fealty to the moon princess and made them all inhabitants of the moon kingdom "empowered" by those planets. Up to that point fandom had broadly assumed the former and frankly, the former is way more interesting and fun? It's not as tragic a missed opportunity as Arakawa completely dropping the ball with the homunculi when what the FMA 2003 had cooked up for them was infinitely more interesting (and thematically appropriate) than what they ended up being in the manga (oh boy Sloth... is a guy who digs a hole! Lust is a rando sexy titty lady with no personality who dies immediately! wow! brilliant, so many feels lmao) but it's up there.

Kinda feel that way about Gege largely region-locking sorcery, though I do get why he did it. Idk if I were to write JJK fic I'd probably retcon that out completely. (Or be like: Tengen lied or better yet every country has a barrier and thinks they're the only ones with sorcery.)

Hmmm my last edgy opinion about Sailor Moon is that I also prefer the anime's portrayal of Haruka: in the manga she comes across as a hyper-feminine straight woman's fantasy of a butch lesbian (which is exactly what she is so no surprises there lol) whereas in the anime she's a lot more like the real thing, and much more relatable (I strongly suspect that Ikuhara, based on his comments re: his male co-writers and his casual mentions of crossdressing and his never marrying, is closeted lgbtq).

Despite being a huge fan of Sailor Moon, I've never really liked the manga. I love the art and that's pretty much it. The Usagi/Mamoru relationship is boring, the villains are one-note, and the other girls barely get to have any interests or personality. That being said, I still want to see the Cosmos movie and I'm very annoyed that there hasn't been an official international release. If they can release the latest Digimon movie dubbed in the US like a week after it aired in Japan, why couldn't they do the same for Sailor Moon?

I think the manga has its own merits (the manga equivalent of the whole fourth season isn't a filler-bloated go-nowhere write-off unlike the anime version) but yeah, everything you said is true: nobody but Usagi gets any characterization and the relationships between all the senshi are really the heart of the story in the anime. And I agree that the manga villains are cartoon versions of what appear in the anime, which tried to give them some personality and motivation beyond being eeeeviiiiilllll.

I have no idea what's going on with the international release, I seriously expected it to have been out on Netflix by now, like Eternal was.
