I've only seen Dear Boys (basketball), which I don't think could have been gayer if they had actually made it gay.

The dodge ball episode in Spy x Family was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I just can't get into the lack of stakes. Almost all of them are about high school students and tournaments, so you get 'oh no we have to play a game against No Name School and if we lose senpai will never win the big tournament and the hero will never face his rival on Other Team! Better spend six episodes on this game with an ultimate outcome that is completely impossible to predict!'. And I know you can argue that shounen battle anime are similar, but at least those sometimes kill off a side character or let the heroes lose. The only sports anime I've been able to get into tends to be either stuff about adults (like Giant Killing), stuff that's more about the characters than the sport (like Yuri on Ice or Free!, which are also helped by the fact that it's a lot harder to stretch out a single figure skating competition or swim race over a billion episodes), or shows based around more 'strategic' sports (like Hikaru no Go or Chihayafuru).

I like certain sports anime (like the ones where the conflict is more character driven than the tournament or whatever). Sometimes the conflict feels really silly to me, but I'm not really the target audience or a sports person in real life.

I liked Return to Oz tbh, it was creepy. I wouldn't say no to a faithful rendition of the series, but there are other untouched properties that I'd like to see more.

I have all of the books, original 1917-era hardcovers, except the o.g. Wizard of Oz. Finally read that a few months ago. It tracks with the rest of the books but it's nothing like what people would want if they grew up only knowing the Judy Garland movie.

that said, they're pretty sexist (given the author's time period) and also sadly bereft of real conflict, aside from Glinda Of Oz and I guess Ozma's backstory. They'd be really disappointing as tv-episodes given the sheer amount of "wacky magical scene that has zero lasting impact haha cutsey whimsey" and lack of overarching plotline that isn't "Dorothy (or some other 8 year old girl) goes to a magical place." They were written for 8 year olds. They're dumb, plot-wise. I enjoy them as books set against the backdrop of the time period but they're not genius, they're dumb books for children who can't handle people being hurt more than a scratch on the hand.

I think the movie adaptation is a good idea. And I hope it helps boost the possibility of faithful adaptations of the whole OG series.

Yeah, the Nat Lamp movies are like an episode of SNL that has two good skits in the whole 90 minutes. Like, they could have been so much better.

I still laugh at Cousin Eddie and the "that's real tomato ketchup" scene in the first one, but the Christmas one sucks balls and the stupid bonus plot gives me agita.

I also hate them. Mainly because they are supposed to be some sort of aquatic creatures but look like weird Carebear bunny mascots. Their design is just one huge ridiculous miss in my eyes and I also really hate that the playable version is another creepy loli for no particular reason.

Hear, hear, OP. Buck continually acts without thinking, causing chaos and troubling everyone around him, and he's never, ever learned to freaking listen! I really despise his character and fail to understand why the narrative treats him like some golden retriever who can't help knocking over your favorite vase. He's a gd adult. There should be consequences.

I could not agree more, Anon. I love this movie, it was such a wonderful homage to the original movie with Christopher Reeves, and the musical callbacks to John Williams score were haunting and beautiful.
