I've only seen Dear Boys (basketball), which I don't think could have been gayer if they had actually made it gay.

The dodge ball episode in Spy x Family was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I mean, there was that swimming anime that was also gayer than gay without trying but

Kuroko no Baskue, Daia no Ace, Haiykuu, Eyeshield 21, maybe those are the top leaders in each sport (basketball, baseball, volleyball, American football) but they're leaders followed by anywhere from 2-5 additional series set in each sport. And then there's soccer-football, wrestling (sadly not sumo, I'd kill for a fun sumo manga), kendo, jiujitsu, swimming, diving, track, bicycle sports, and how many other sports that have had manga and/or anime? It's A Lot. I understand OP's point, because treating sports - and board games for that matter - as if they were ridonculous shounen battles is a level of cringe most people aren't prepared for.

Yuri On Ice is the gayest without giving us an actual kiss. Just a bunch of fakeouts. ಠ_ಠ

omg how did I forget Yuri on Ice! You're totally right.

There's a kiss, you just have an arm in the way

There's Hinomaru Sumo. It's a lot of fun, especially the first episode.

The power of friendship in a sports anime is a different flavor man.

'I get second hand embarrassment from how seriously they take it'

I feel like you have never met someone who plays sports in your life.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, those people are embarrassing too.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, absolutely. But my point is that it's not something unique to sports anime, it's mirroring how a lot of people are about sports in real life.

As a super baseball fan who doesn't play but loves to watch, I can actually say we're not only MORE ridiculously serious and cringe, I can even say that sometimes in sports anime don't take the sport seriously enough.

I just can't get into the lack of stakes. Almost all of them are about high school students and tournaments, so you get 'oh no we have to play a game against No Name School and if we lose senpai will never win the big tournament and the hero will never face his rival on Other Team! Better spend six episodes on this game with an ultimate outcome that is completely impossible to predict!'. And I know you can argue that shounen battle anime are similar, but at least those sometimes kill off a side character or let the heroes lose. The only sports anime I've been able to get into tends to be either stuff about adults (like Giant Killing), stuff that's more about the characters than the sport (like Yuri on Ice or Free!, which are also helped by the fact that it's a lot harder to stretch out a single figure skating competition or swim race over a billion episodes), or shows based around more 'strategic' sports (like Hikaru no Go or Chihayafuru).

Have you seen Run with the Wind? It's about college students, and there are some very real, health-related stakes. It's one of the best sports series I've seen. Plus, the series Overtake about F4 racing just wrapped up, and touches a lot in overcoming trauma.

I did watch Overtake, it was one of my favorites this season! Run With the Wind is on my to-watch list too, I need to find time to give it a watch.

Okay, but ... have y'all never met a high school boy?? They do feel like these things are huge stakes, even if with a few years, they'll (hopefully) realize how minor it really was.

I couldn't agree less with the people here dissing sports animes; they're some of my favorites, even though I don't play or watch any real-life sports. I find them wildly entertaining if there's anything genuine or original about them. The only thing I don't like is how willing they are to destroy their bodies for their precious high-school team. I don't find it unrealistic ... but I'm sure their older selves will seriously regret pushing themselves past the point where they can make a full recovery just to heroically sacrifice themselves for their team to ~maybe~ get the win.

I like certain sports anime (like the ones where the conflict is more character driven than the tournament or whatever). Sometimes the conflict feels really silly to me, but I'm not really the target audience or a sports person in real life.
