Okay. Then you go pick fruit in the fields all day. And other migrant jobs. Oh, wait, you won't? They're the undesirable jobs? Gee, I wonder why "them thur ee-lee-gulls" can even get those jobs.

That isn't what I said at all.

And I find the argument you're repeating here, an argument a lot of people make in all seriousness, really troublesome. Why is it that we say, "you don't want those jobs anyway" as a rejoinder to, "they're taking our jobs?" Why is it that we're fine with migrants taking this undesirable work, with the kind of wages and conditions that residents will not put up with? Isn't that an argument in favor of exploitation?

Too right!

Immigrants will do all kinds of jobs, and make the country as a whole all the more wealthy because of it. It's one of the most empirically and firmly settled things we know in all of economics: immigrants do not diminish the wealth of the country they immigrate to, they increase it. That point is precisely why we should welcome immigrants with open arms.

I'm sorry, please tell me you aren't saying that it's okay to exploit migrants because doing so makes the country as a whole more wealthy.

No, I'm certainly not saying that, as you can see in my post where I say that immigrants will do all kind of jobs.

Okay, but that's in response to me asking why we're okay with migrants taking undesirable jobs, after someone brought up the, "you don't want those jobs anyway" argument. "All kinds of jobs" certainly includes those exploitative jobs, and it comes across like you're trying to talk about that.

You're absolutely right to object to migrants taking undesirable jobs, and they won't.

I'm not sure why you think they won't, when they do. They absolutely do, and we allow it at least in part by allowing such jobs to exist in the first place.
