What if we don't have the resources to accommodate them? What happens then?

Right, because the only options are let everyone in or let Texas make up its own rules and do the job of the federal government and threaten to become its own country. Except no, there are a whole lot of options between those two extremes.

How do you decide who to let in and who to not? The people not let in are also human beings.

There are laws governing that. Give them the chance to apply for asylum, it is actually really, really difficult to get asylum granted.

Re: I hate this state so much

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
But that's just my point. The people who don't get asylum, or who don't otherwise qualify to stay, are also human beings. With few exceptions, all of them have good reasons to want to leave their homes. Isn't it in some sense cruel to send them back?

Nothing to see here folks, just a reasonable question asked in good faith.

100% tax rate over $100mil. We'd have plenty for everyone.

"Them illegals are taking our jobs"

Okay. Then you go pick fruit in the fields all day. And other migrant jobs. Oh, wait, you won't? They're the undesirable jobs? Gee, I wonder why "them thur ee-lee-gulls" can even get those jobs.

Re: I hate this state so much

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
That isn't what I said at all.

And I find the argument you're repeating here, an argument a lot of people make in all seriousness, really troublesome. Why is it that we say, "you don't want those jobs anyway" as a rejoinder to, "they're taking our jobs?" Why is it that we're fine with migrants taking this undesirable work, with the kind of wages and conditions that residents will not put up with? Isn't that an argument in favor of exploitation?

Re: I hate this state so much

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Too right!

Immigrants will do all kinds of jobs, and make the country as a whole all the more wealthy because of it. It's one of the most empirically and firmly settled things we know in all of economics: immigrants do not diminish the wealth of the country they immigrate to, they increase it. That point is precisely why we should welcome immigrants with open arms.

Re: I hate this state so much

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, please tell me you aren't saying that it's okay to exploit migrants because doing so makes the country as a whole more wealthy.

There is absolutely no conceivable way to conclude that we don't have the resources to accommodate them. The United States is by far the richest country in the history of the human race. We have wealth beyond the wildest dreams of avarice of our ancestors. The question is how we put that wealth to use.

Re: I hate this state so much

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
But that's in part because we subsidize our standards of living through the importation of goods. We have a trade deficit that runs in the tens of billions of dollars; much of our resources are in fact taken from other countries. And the price of that is both the degradation of environment and the exploitation of people who are outside the US. Part of what drives people to want to migrate here is that we've destroyed their homes in order to make ours prosperous.

if you're the same OP as above, i understand what you're saying. if we're prosperous, it's because of exploitation of others and the continued reliance of wealth as an argument for open borders doesn't seem to be considering how we would have to continue to get that wealth.

the moral argument, which isn't wrong, doesn't seem to consider exactly on how many fronts the US must make amends, and what we as a people would have to do to make them regarding our reliance on foreign and cheap labor (yes, even those in poverty here rely on cheap foreign labor), not just the government.

texas is still full of shit regardless.

Honestly? We have the resources. Because immigrants are here to work and live in peace. They don’t need a damn thing from you or Texas. What they deserve is a transparent immigration system that conducts business in a reasonable timeframe. It’s always amazed me how the conservatives in America are so stupid that they don’t realize that documented immigrants pay more in to this country than they’ll ever take out. Making it impossible for immigrants to get documentation or deporting them just drains the pot they’d happily help fill.

We have the resources...that we import from other places. That come to us on the backs of people who will never experience our level of wealth, or our standards of living; people whose countries are destroyed in order to make ours whole.

How do you conduct the business of immigration in a reasonable timeframe? What is the timeframe, and how many people would the government need to employ in order to make that timeframe feasible? How are we paying all of those people?

I have a feeling you won't give up what you're whining about in order to live in a tent off the land in the woods, you just don't want brown people around.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's really disingenuous. Would you be okay with me supposing that you're perfectly fine with treating brown people like shit in order to subsidize your lifestyle, so long as they're in a different country, totally removed from you? Probably not, right? Because that's probably not how you actually feel.

Re: I hate this state so much

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, if we really have the resources, then let's use them to help the people who were born here first, because there are plenty of US-born people who are currently living in poverty.

Re: I hate this state so much

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
We have enough for both, we can help everyone at the same time if we want. The people who get to decide what we do just don't want to.

Re: I hate this state so much

(Anonymous) 2024-01-27 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
We would have to use more resources to gatekeep than to just help everyone.

This. A huge, huge part of the reason immigration is so expensive is because we've made it so damn difficult and because we've turned it into a prison system. But of course Republicans won't want to change that because they like demonizing immigrants and making it out as if most of them are dangerous rather than a small few who almost always get caught and deported and because they are in favor of the private immigration prisons that earn massive profits for companies that run them.
