Right, because the only options are let everyone in or let Texas make up its own rules and do the job of the federal government and threaten to become its own country. Except no, there are a whole lot of options between those two extremes.

How do you decide who to let in and who to not? The people not let in are also human beings.

There are laws governing that. Give them the chance to apply for asylum, it is actually really, really difficult to get asylum granted.

But that's just my point. The people who don't get asylum, or who don't otherwise qualify to stay, are also human beings. With few exceptions, all of them have good reasons to want to leave their homes. Isn't it in some sense cruel to send them back?

The devil doesn't need advocates

Maybe not, but good policy needs the consideration of counterfactuals.

Okay, Rethuglican. We get it, you wanna suck Reaganomics' cock.

Foreign policy during the Reagan era contributed to this problem. I'm not sure why you think I support that; I'm literally saying downthread that I'd like to undo it.

I mean, I'd personally be in favor of generally open borders that only restricted people that were genuinely dangerous. But that's never going to happen. There have to be compromises. Not everyone is going to get to stay. But we can at least treat them like human beings and not an invading enemy hoard. We can give them basic rights and dignity. We can give them the chance to present their case.

I definitely think we can strive to give people basic rights and dignity, but I'm not sure how feasible that is. Even when we're trying, the best we seem to be able to do is to house them in tents and bunkers with awful conditions. If that's not an indication that we lack the resources to handle the situation, I'm not sure what else is.

I think what I would like to see is more focus on undoing the disastrous effects of our foreign policy (in the case of our southern border, our treatment of Latin America specifically) so that people are less likely to feel as though they need to flee their homes. This is a problem of our own making. It's a downstream effect of us acting as if we have the right to interfere in their countries in order to "secure" and enrich our own, and that's what makes me angriest about it all. Of course, fixing that is a long way off, and I understand that. But I also think the immediate issues are more complicated than we're willing to admit.

You aren't wrong. It is complicated. And again, I do think there will have to be compromises on both sides. But nothing justifies what Texas is doing right now. What they are doing is evil.

I don't agree with Texas' policy, either. I came in provocatively (and in retrospect I probably shouldn't have), but I think we're probably in accord on this issue overall. I'm mostly just frustrated by how simplified it all gets in the general conversation.
