FWIW, I tend to think of those kinds of repeated requests less as "I didn't like the one I got" and more "this is my favourite trope/theme/idea and I want to read it a thousand different times in a thousand different ways, I just love it that much".

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If it is something I'd really like then I'd ask for it a thousand times, even the same way, with only ever minor changes. It means you've completed and successfully zeroed in to exactly what the requestee really wants. It is a huge success, and a vote of endorsement.

As someone who has requested the same premise twice in fandom events: this. It's my favourite trope! I want to see it in as many variations as possible.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh, it seems much more like "I just can't get enough and I want MOAR" than anything else and it's more helpful to think of it that way than to assume the worst and feel bad about it.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. With my chosen kinks or tropes I will (and have) read thousands of fic with the same damn prompt/trope/kink over and over and over again.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I followed an author that had a series that they titled "The same story told different ways" or something like that, and I loved them for that. Just the same pairings, the same basic tropes, told in different ways over and over and over again.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. I've read 1,000 identity porn fics and I will read another 1,000,000 identity porn fics if I have the opportunity.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I mean, in big fandoms I can create very complex searches in AO3 and then read the results all day long. With Yuletide, you have to make repeat requests :| Absolutely no reflection on the awesome gift makers. <3

Yeah for sure, I assume it's a two cakes situation. Like... I've asked for a thing, and when my gifter chose a different prompt, I started writing one myself, but I'll still ask for the same thing again because I want more takes on it.

Yeah, if i got a gift for a request and I didn't like it, I'd actually be scared to request it again.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-29 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I'd say it depends on the kind of prompt used. If it's a very general prompt that could be interpreted in many different ways, then yes I could see reposting it as a "I just love this trope so much". But if it is a very detailed prompt that could only really be written one way, then a repost becomes a "I want what I already got, but by a different writer" and that certainly does not feel kind towards the first writer.

Though to be perfectly honest, even with the first kind of prompt, "the requester didn't fully like my writing so they're reposting the prompt in hopes of getting something actually good this time around" feels like a much more logical conclusion to come to than "the requester loved my writing so much they want other writers to write the same thing".

Sorry but that’s ridiculous.

You're ridiculous.

DA

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't think so. Brains are tricky things and I can absolutely understand having this reaction even if a more rational part of you can acknowledge it's really not about the quality of your fic at all... the recipient probably just wants even more of that thing.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This feels like it needs a next twist on the "two cakes" meme.

People who are really into cake will keep wanting more cake, it doesn't mean the first bit of cake they ate wasn't absolutely delicious.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I’m a simple person when it comes to fics. I like domestic fluff, getting snowed in, and first kisses, so that’s what I ask for every year. It has nothing to do with the quality of the gift fic I received.

I get it

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So I am definitely someone who will read the same trope or prompt done by a millions differnt authors - or hell even the same author - over and over and over again. I cannot have enough of my IDfic. But I also have anxiety and bad brain days of lower than low self esteem and not thinking anything I did is 'good enough' or that people are being genuine in their compliments, so I get it. I could absolutely see myself having that kind of reaction, even though I know it's illogical and not all that realistic.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I get why you would wonder, but I assume they just really like the ship/trope.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally understandable. Just remind yourself of the two cakes.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-29 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I’m a two cakes kinda person. I bet you smashed it and they’re hoping for more of the same.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-29 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I can’t say as I’ve ever read a story so good that I didn’t want to see anything like it ever again.

The opposite, sure. I’ve seen takes that were so bad they ruined the concept for me. But if I like something, I usually want more of it.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-29 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because I want another strawberry cake, it doesn't mean I didn't like the first one. I just want more cake :)
