I'm hoping for a return to magic crystals and psyonic aliens, personally. I could use some of that old fashioned seventies wackadoodle Sci Fi.

Compliments to the artwork and font choice for this secret, it looks great.

As for the actual secret - I assume you mean movies/tv? Because new stuff is popping up all the time in books and games. I kind of like the idea of there not being one big franchise, but just fun little popular projects all over.

When I was a teen, I thought teens who write free online sci-fi inspired by action anime would make the jump to selling sci-fi as they got older. Maybe it’ll happen when the baby boomers die out.

I know a ton of people who are into super-popular fantasy series that aren't part of major franchises - they're just mostly xianxia, shounen, and other Asian imports.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-28 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The only way to make new franchises is to keep making original stuff, see what clicks with people, and then make a big huge franchise out of that.

Actually, the medium for coming up with new franchises is almost certainly just gonna be video games. And they're gonna stay primarily in video games.

Everything Everywhere was a breath of fresh air, I just hope there aren't any bad sequels in the works.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-29 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of hoping that fantasy and sci-fi TV and movies take a break for a few years to let other genres have some time in the limelight. This break could also spark some ideas for more inventive genre crossovers for fantasy and sci-fi.

I think there is a need to change what is considered breakthrough. Because right now it means "everybody and their mother loved it and watched it 50 times and it brought us 100500 of money". Really good thing is rarely for everyone's taste. And I mean it not in a gatekeeping way, just universal experience isn't real

(Anonymous) 2024-01-29 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve never heard of him but I can relate to feeling gatekeepy about one person/band/book/show/whatever. I have one and it went stratospheric. My id says everyone is wrong for not recognizing sooner, they’re all fanning wrong, and I was here first, dammit! I just have to clench my jaw and remind myself that if I say or act on those thoughts, I’d be a gigantic asshole.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-29 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel that way about his covers and collaborations. I heard Dial Drunk on the local indie station and immediately wanted to hear it a million more times. I love Stick Season. I mostly just listen to the radio so that's all I heard UNTIL I heard the version with Post Malone and I'm just like GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE. Hoizer can stay. But only because I can't tell them apart vocally.

So yeah, I'm the fans you'd wish to gatekeep but I don't go see shows very often anyway. It's all good. If I were to pay money I'd listen to the whole album first to make sure it was worth sitting through.

Plenty of writers did that back in the day. Diana Gabaldon was one; also Twilight started as Dark Shadows fanfic. It goes back to the '70s at least.

Depends how prevalent magic is, but I agree.

My thoughts always come down to inventions. If magic is ubiquitous, things like ... lighters wouldn't have been invented. Matches, even. Why would they?

I'm okay with it being only slightly different if it's present in the world, but only learned by a minority, whether it's because of blood or natural talent (HP/SoM), opportunity/secrecy (RoL), money (TNOTW) or whatever, but it would still probably change the face of invention unless it was extremely uncommon.

FWIW, I tend to think of those kinds of repeated requests less as "I didn't like the one I got" and more "this is my favourite trope/theme/idea and I want to read it a thousand different times in a thousand different ways, I just love it that much".

Same. I mean, maybe not between just me and google docs, but maybe between me and a few good friends. I started getting in my own head about numbers of kudos and comments, about how people are going to perceive me, shit like that. It really took the fun out of it all.

I'm trying hard to get back into fandom being a place where I do shit I enjoy, rather than treating it like a popularity contest. I think I'm gonna sign up for [community profile] 100ships and just create stuff for me and my friends.

This is a bit of an odd one, but, American posters, where in America can I go to be pretty much assured of being able to see snapping turtles in the wild? Visiting in August, in the central Appalachia region, so hopefully somewhere within reasonable driving distance of there would be good. Thanks.
