I feel that second paragraph. I mean, sure, it's kind of nice about geekery being more "acceptable" but it does also feel too "public" as you say.

(Kind of a side note) I kind of liked it when it was more secretive and special, and it didn't seem like those with zero interest in the weirdest parts of fandom were "coopting" the experience - of course, I know how horribly gatekeeperish that sounds, so I don't say anything about it. But goddamnit, I've been writing fic for decades and engaging in heavy discussions with others about games, TV shows, movies and books. I hate feeling like, as much as I want to connect with others over fandom, I'm just going to end up talking to someone who's only into it superficially. (Again, nothing wrong with that, but it's hard to determine who is invested into it and who is just into it for the fad, until the next geek trend comes out.)

I think the thing for me was that in the spaces I was in, the people who weren't interested in tyhe weirder corners of the fandom either steered clear or were far more tolerant of the existence of things that didn't cater specifically to them. The communities I was in were made up of adults and it was sort of understood that one person's kink was going to be another's squick. It was understood that you would occasionally encounter things didn't like or even upset you, and that wasn't the end of the world. It did help that those spaces were moderated, and if someone proved themselves to be a bad actor, they would be dealt with by the mods.

SA

I think what I miss the most is the loss of a sense of community.
