I think the thing for me was that in the spaces I was in, the people who weren't interested in tyhe weirder corners of the fandom either steered clear or were far more tolerant of the existence of things that didn't cater specifically to them. The communities I was in were made up of adults and it was sort of understood that one person's kink was going to be another's squick. It was understood that you would occasionally encounter things didn't like or even upset you, and that wasn't the end of the world. It did help that those spaces were moderated, and if someone proved themselves to be a bad actor, they would be dealt with by the mods.

I think what I miss the most is the loss of a sense of community.
