Anime - nay or yay?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I liked anime in the late 90s early 00s but haven't really been into anything in years. I wouldn't say I'm an "anime fan", but I wouldn't say I hate it either. Lain, Haibane Renmei, Gundam Wing, Gunslinger Girls, and Noir are a few I can remember being into back in the day. Nothing has really grabbed me since those though.

And I guess I still like the Miyazaki movies if you count those, but I remember that being a hot debate in some circles if it falls under anime or not.

Anime by itself is okay. I think it depends on the show. I don't seek it out as much as I used to, but I'm always open to something interesting.

I do still like anime, but I'm definitely not an avid follower as much as I use to be when I was a kid and watched every kind of anime just because it was anime.

Sometimes I'll watch the new ones if it catches my attention, like Beastars, My Love Story! and Mashle. But at the moment I've been watch anime series that have been on my to-watch list since forever.
I had finished watching DNAngel, Angel Beats and am currently halfway through Read or Dream and the third series of Card Captor Sakura at the moment.

Like 80% nay. I got crunchyroll last year and tried like...15 anime. The only one I loved was Bungo Stray Dogs. But before that I had enjoyed some like FMA:B and Cowboy Bebop.

It's not a genre, it's an artistic style. It depends on the content.

we're at a point where anime can't be treated as a monolith any more than movies or drama shows or whatever. I like shows, it doesn't matter if they were animated in Japan or filmed in the UK. Fantasy/adventure anime series seem to have what I want out of fantasy in general so sure, I like some of those. I don't like slice of life romance whether it's animated or live action, doesn't matter.

which makes it really hard to go to anime conventions or talk to "anime fans" bc no, I'm not watching (or reading the manga for) everything new and hot, but it's the only place to go to find fellow fans of the one show I *am* watching.

I, personally, really dislike the style of anime that follows the looks of Sword Art Online, Geshin Impact, etc. Can't say anything about their story, just think it looks ugly, boring, and too samey.

Now, anime overall, it's difficult to say something is bad just because it came from a different country. I haven't been following any, but have been thinking of revisiting a few I watched as a teen, classics I missed, and maybe pick up a few newer ones later.

Nothing later than the mid 90s. I prefer the classic character designs and not the more mode4n styles.

Anime is a medium not a genre and all that, so if one looked hard enough they'd probably find some they liked, no matter how much they "weren't into anime", but I get what people mean when they say that, because it does broadly have conventions that it follows and if you're not into those it can be kind of painful to watch 90% of shows.

Another thing I find people overlook is that most anime, like most cartoons, are for kids, eh? If you don't like to watch kids' shows in your own country, why do you think an anime based on a manga with a target audience of elementary and middle school boys (like almost all shounen) would appeal to you? If you're 30+ and "don't like anime anymore" by which you mean don't like shows aimed at teens now that you're no longer a teen that's not exactly surprising.

I'm 90% "nay" to anime these days but Mushishi remains one of my favourite pieces of media of all time, and I'm loving Sousou no Frieren.

Miyazaki's movies are anime. I'm kind of confused that it's even a debatable fact.
Anime is Japanese animation for westerners. For Japanese, anime is simply cartoon, both Japanese or overseas animation. It's not tied to a specific genre nor to a specific runtime (OVA or Movies are still "anime").

Personally, as I said in the above secret, I got into studying Japanese because I was really into animanga in high school, and now that I'm older I'm still into Japan and Japanese cultures, but I almost never watch any anime.
I still read some manga, though! I have to say, I prefer reading to watching stuff on the TV, especially series, so maybe that's a big factor in my preference.

I know it’s super broad and all, but I’m still nay. I don’t like most western animation of the last 20 years, either. Broadly, all anime I’ve had exposure to share stylistic elements that I dislike. Many of those are now appearing in western animation and I don’t like them there, either. So even if the characters and story would be of interest to me, the medium itself is off-putting.

Such a general category I can't say either. Some anime is great, some is awful.

full on nay. anime can look so visually beautiful and some animation can be well done but it doesn't interest me enough to keep up with

I think people have major nostalgia goggles for old anime because a lot of the bad ones just never saw the light of day outside of Japan. Now every anime being put out is easy to watch on Crunchyroll regardless of quality. Though even a lot of what was popular in the West back in the old days... Still wasn't that good compared to what we can get today. The one gripe I have about current anime as opposed to older ones is the overwhelmingness of the isekai, especially the reincarnation type where after a few episodes the reincarnation and isekainess is barely even relevant anymore. But that's not specifically an anime problem, it's a light novel problem.

I love that long-running maga that get adapted into anime have stopped doing filler in the anime (Naruto, Bleach) or making up a different ending (Fullmetal Alchemist, Chrono Crusade). Waiting longer for the manga to catch up is better than getting shitty changes immediately, and I actually like the breathing room between seasons.

Agreed. There were plenty of crappy anime back in the day, they just didn't tend to get picked up for Western release but if you can find copies of some of them, whoo boy. Some of them actually DID get US releases and that just made them even funnier given the general quality of dubs from back then.

I actually want some recs. I am just too old for shounen now. I am at the point of disliking big-eyed character anything. I've tried to get into Vinland Saga, it seems interesting but I just hate the main character. My friend is into Dorohedoro, but I also find everyone annoying here for some reason.
I would really like to watch something Mushishi like: relaxing in a melancholic way.

What types of stories do you tend to like?

Re: Anime - nay or yay?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-09 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Mystical/mythological, thrillers, sci-fi. Some action, but in anime it's often too juvenile got me

More of a general animation fan than anime specifically. Things I've liked include Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost Hound, Lain, Monster, Cowboy Bebop, and pretty much anything by Satoshi Kon. More recently I've liked what I've seen of Otherside Picnic and Heavenly Delusion, but the Greater Plot seems to be approaching on the latter and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Used to be yay, but now I just go back to old favourites with nostalgia goggles firmly on.

There's just too much to filter through considering I prefer zero to minimal pervy stuff, minimal military stuff, and maximum world building - and none of that works as a search filters.

I like a few, spread wide over all sorts of genres. But I'm terrible at watching series in general so anime series are no different. And the vast majority of movies either don't interest me in general or are too blandly het romance centered for my tastes.
