I agree about DS9. That's definitely where they made things less idealistic and more realistic, and it opened the door for grimdark that we're seeing now. The point of Star Trek is the hope for a better future. If you're going to turn it into "the same as now but with better tech" then it's not Star Trek.

Voyager had potential but failed pretty quickly.
