Thirst trap comments were how I realized I'm asexual! Because I always thought it was all a big joke everyone was in on and we were all having fun saying ridiculous things. Then someone told me that no, when people say they would bang that, they would bang that, and that got me starting on re-evaluating many a thing, lol.

I still enjoy reading thirst trap comments but now I also wonder which ones are jokes and which ones are serious. Adding alcohol to the mix sounds like a great idea, NGL.

I'm with you, OP, and I say that as someone who still enjoys the original movie as campy good homoerotic fun.

This review sums it up for me. Military propaganda aside, the sequel is a Standard Tom Cruise Vanity Project(TM), just like every other action flick he's made for the past ~30 years.

As for the "emotional depth" part, IMO the sequel leans HARD on assuming the audience still has lasting affection for Poor Dead Goose, because they milk that plot point for all they can.

If someone is saying that Top Gun Maverick has "depth" then I have to wonder if their intellectual and emotional range can be encompassed by a kiddie pool.

I assume they're talking about how Iceman was treated during the film given Val Kilmer's health, not necessarily Goose's death from the first film. But also a dead father is something to be sad about and not all the pathos has to come from Maverick himself.

I can understand critics saying things like, "It's a fun popcorn movie with stunning aerial sequences, just don't think too hard about the rest." But to see so many people treat it like a serious Oscars Best Picture contender was a bit much. My theory, the critics making the biggest fuss over it are of an age to feel strong nostalgia for the original.

I find the shows in that universe so disappointing. Chicago Fire could have been really good! They had great characters and the setting made for interesting storylines. But it got bogged down in unnecessary and stupid drama so quickly, ugh.

Chicago Med and the police one didn't even have the benefit of a somewhat unique setting, making the stupid over the top drama even more obvious and annoying.
