Couple of posts ago we got a secret about it being okay to be a troll. And you hated on that secret, anon, and now we get a secret asking people to not be a troll, and you are here, the exact same nonny, hating on it. Make up your damn mind. And yeah, we know it is you. Farting in an elevator filled with people isn't breaking any rules, but it's still a shitty thing to do if you could wait until you get out instead. OP thinks the same principle should apply to FS. I don't see what's so wild about that.

Can someone make this comment make sense? I understand all the words, but it feels like there are random words left out of the sentence in order for it to actually make sense.

I mean I'd mayyyybe agree if you said the first comment shouldn't be just a flat out asshole reply or something triggering or just obviously trolly (but even then, not really) but you're saying unless it's 100% positive support people shouldn't comment?

"If you're sincere you should be fine waiting" is the most ridiculous thing. Do you understand how conversations work? It's not all just praise and agreements. I like it when people disagree with me on my secrets, and I like it when people agree. I like conversation and discussion and I don't want some arbitrary rules of policing when people are allowed to comment based on some randos insecurities.

There are going to be trolls everywhere. A better approach would be to learn to ignore them and scroll by to the genuine comments.

But also, A+ secret. This is genuinely an opinion that I can see why you don't share and kept secret and should spark some entertaining replies. I approve.

Do people spend a lot of continuous time on FS? I tend to look at the secrets, comment if I got something to say and then.... Possible don't come back to it until the next day when checking to see if the next post is up. In theory I'd be fine with waiting to comment since I don't troll but in reality it would just mean that I likely never comment at all. (Obviously that brings up whether a negative comment or no comment is better overall but in general "wait until you comment" would not work for me at all.)

That's kind of what I was thinking. A lot of the time, I'll pop in for fifteen minutes, go do something else for a couple hours. I ain't waiting around for someone else to comment on something.

I come back and refresh every so often while I'm doing other things and will often do so all night until I'm done at my computer or phone. I like having discussions and reading what others comment, so refreshing to see new replies and whatnots.

I check in through the evening but sometimes it’s hours before I check back or I don’t get a chance at all. I usually comment when I return simply because I need time to digest the secrets and sometimes the comments, but if it’s a fandom I really know I don’t need to think about and will comment immediately.

Yep for me, I either arrive soon after the new secrets are posted (and so I have opportunity to make the first comment on threads) or hours later with a lot of long comment threads already posted.

I sometimes check in every few hours when I'm at work to read comments but often don't have time to post any comments.
It's usually after work where I will have more time to sit down and read comments and submit my own, and that's usually more than 12 hours after the new secrets are posted.

Like...I work odd hours, and I post a comment (whether kind, judgmental, mean or just random) when I have time to do it.
Focusing on whether or not the first comment should be "kind" is weird AF.
What if no one else ever comments?
What if two people post at the same time/within a short period of each other and they have complete opposite energies?
How does anyone even know who posts when considering FS is full of anons?

Sorry if you were/are embarrassed if a secret of yours had the first comment in the thread be critical or not the nicest comment but this is an online community where people post when they can. We're not all just sitting around refreshing FS to check all the comments nonstop.

I think that's kind of silly. OPs aren't gonna just read the first comment and nothing else. And I'm not sure about this proposed link between sincerely held opinions and waiting. Doesn't that imply that a mark of sincerity is keeping quiet? And if that's our metric, then doesn't that create a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy, where the loudest and most visible (and therefore most impactful) people are also the most disingenuous?

As long as it's a serious and respectful reply I don't think the first reply needs to agree. Going out of your way to open the comments to a secret with something rude is dickish, I agree with you there. But if someone read my secret and gives a sincere response saying why they don't feel the same I don't feel insulted.

If I say "I loved the end of this series even though most fans hated it" in a secret, for instance, the first comment saying "that ending was just too OOC for me" or whatever wouldn't bother me at all. As long as they aren't insulting me or starting shit for no reason, disagreement is totally fine.

As someone who's submitted a lot of secrets, I honestly don't care how the comment thread plays out.

No comments? Oh well.
Comments full of people making fun of the secret? Oh well.
Comments where everyone misconstrued my intention and come down harsh on the secret? Oh well.

I've had more than one secret where the first comment is either a troll mocking the secret or someone vehemently disagreeing with the secret and yeah the first few times it happened I was upset or embarrassed. But I learned that there will always be threads where people will have strong opinions and that FS will always have at least one troll who will post hostile comments, and that's OK.
I will eventually have another secret to submit and every secret thread is different in terms of engagement. I don't have a lot of emotional investment on whether or not the FS community will be nice or mean to my secrets.
