It’s wild the rules people make up and judge others for not following 🙄

(Anonymous) 2024-02-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
IOP didn't claim that anyone was breaking any rules.

Farting in an elevator filled with people isn't breaking any rules, but it's still a shitty thing to do if you could wait until you get out instead. OP thinks the same principle should apply to FS. I don't see what's so wild about that.

SA
I originally started my comment with "I mean," and deleted that, but apparently left the "I" standing. Just clarifying so no one claims I'm OP trying to sock puppet.

... I wouldn't remotely consider farting in an elevator to be a 'shitty' thing for someone to do, more of a body reaction that someone might not have been able to hold in. Is it pleasant depending on the smell? No. But it's not some horrible asshole move either. So that is a very bizarre comparison.

Ayrt

That's why I specified that it's a shitty thing to do *if you could have waited*. If you could spare others the unpleasantness, why wouldn't you?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Because it’s painful and unpleasant and difficult? Some other people can smell my fart stink for ten seconds, and I’m not being an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like you're ignoring the part where I say that it only applies when you could have waited.

I have chronic GI issues; trust me, I know that sometimes there's nothing you can do. Which is why I don't understand why anyone would subject others to the unpleasantness when they got the choice.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
and I’m saying that I don’t think it’s really possible for farts to be a “could have waited” kind of thing.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Most of them are in my experience, actually. I was taught that it's impolite to let one rip in public so the polite thing has always been to keep it in until you can get to a toilet or at least somewhere without people.

But yes, if that's not the case for you then that was a really bad example.

(Also, I now want to know which one of us is the outlier, ngl.)

New anon, this thread went to a wild place.

LOL

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
It really did

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I hope this gets remembered in the FS discourse hall of fame along with soap dishes.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
Is it wanky enough to make it into the hall of fame of such gems as soap dish wank and husky wank, though?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously, it's not a shitty thing to do.

It's a farty thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
If you make an unfortunate mistake, it could be a sharty thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
But they're not really advocating waiting until you're out of elevator. It's more like they're advocating waiting until someone is standing in front of you on the elevator, in the hopes that that person will block the stench.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
The way I interpret the secret is that OP wants people to do the polite thing. The polite thing, in their mind, is to not be a troll or harsh in the first comment.

The comment I replied to claimed it was wild that OP would want that but I don't think wanting people to be nice is wild at all. Wether OP's opinion is right is another matter, but the sentiment seems relatable to me.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-10 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think they're wrong. Like, imagine you've got people coming over to your house. One of them has a really harsh opinion that they wish to share with you. They don't wanna be rude about it, though, so they make sure not to be the first person to enter the house, nor the first one to speak. When they look you in the eye and say, "your house is a fucking travesty, Mark, and everyone knows it. Why don't you get your shit together," do you think, "damn, it sure was polite of them to wait until others had spoken before saying that?"
