I'm with you, OP, and I say that as someone who still enjoys the original movie as campy good homoerotic fun.

This review sums it up for me. Military propaganda aside, the sequel is a Standard Tom Cruise Vanity Project(TM), just like every other action flick he's made for the past ~30 years.

As for the "emotional depth" part, IMO the sequel leans HARD on assuming the audience still has lasting affection for Poor Dead Goose, because they milk that plot point for all they can.

I really loved DS9 back in the day, I really did. I've just got harsher on it with the benefit of hindsight and reflection, and with seeing newer shows take the parts of DS9 that were never meant to become the whole of the franchise and make them the whole of the franchise. With Voyager, while it is flawed, I can see it genuinely tried to keep the same soul and heart in its right place, even if it often fell short of its aims. I grew up, basically, and didn't need to be an edgelord of Trekdom anymore.

I do promise to never change my opinion on Neelix, if that helps.
