I assume they're talking about how Iceman was treated during the film given Val Kilmer's health, not necessarily Goose's death from the first film. But also a dead father is something to be sad about and not all the pathos has to come from Maverick himself.

I love Iceman and I miss poor dead Goose, but his wife wasn't even in this! Disturbing, since I loved Meg Ryan's role. And I didn't dig that they gave Maverick a much younger love interest, either. Fuck Tom Cruise lol.
