To the audience: I think the "debate over shipping" being referred to here is the whole thing with "antis" and whether AO3 is housing/encouraging pedophilia, not "ship wars" in the usual sense.

That could be anon's intent, sure. I don't think AO3 caused that, though.

I'm of the opinion that the whole anti thing is just old-fashioned shipwarring smuggled in the language of social justice, actually, cause as far as I can tell they have the same damn toxic behaviors.

+100000

People who were already inclined to be bullies over their favorite characters and pairings realized that they could get other fans to take them more seriously and gain social clout if they put a fig leaf of social justice rhetoric on their concern trolling, and here we are.

Still not cased by AO3. That's probably the fandom expression of the growing puritanism within western societies.

I think it's also an effect of fandom becoming more mainstream and much more public than it used to be as well.

That too! The more people are in fandom, the more trends in fandom will reflect the larger society.

dgmw, I agree; just a lot of the comments seemed to be like "What has AO3 got to do with the existence of ship wars??" which I thought was probably not what OP was trying to refer to.

Interesting take I didnt think of. Thanks!
