Asking because I've seen heated opinions on this...

(Anonymous) 2024-02-15 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen the very heated and angry kind of opinions that come when people use AI for fanfic . So I'm kind of nervous but.. Would I be hated if anyone knew that I used Character AI with certain characters not to write fic for me but to be a springboard for an idea that I then write on my own or to help me get a grip on characterization of certain tricky characters? Some of the bots are really good characterization wise and I've always struggled when it came to anxiety about writing in character, I never feel like I'm good enough as other writers...
But I don't want to be seen as.. idk a cheat or a hack.
(yes I'm kind of young and stuff.)

First, nobody is going to hate you, personally, for writing fic. Even if it's OOC, even if it's not great, nobody's going to hate you. They may not like your fic, but that's their preference and not anything to do with you.

Second, using AI as a springboard, prompt generator, "I need a way out of this plothole I'm digging" tool, still requires you to write fic, to make a creative effort even if it is with some machine assistance.

People mostly object to a) people who feed an idea into AI and get fully generated fic they then post as their's and b) the ethical issues of AI creators using other people's creative work to "teach" their AI.

Good luck with your fic!

I don't love it because I'm old and skeptoval of sll AI, but if you're still writing the fic yourself is not that different from just asking sometime to help you workshop through a writing problem.

HOWEVER, I would suggest also working towards feeling confident in your own writing. Just because an AI suggests something didn't mean it's good chatacterisation or better than what you come up with yourself.

This. My knee-jerk reaction is to be against it because I'm against AI by principle -- but also because if you really wish to improve as a writer then you're going to have to start writing.

I wouldn't hate you, but if you're wondering whether you'd be "seen as a cheat", well, I think you'd be cheating yourself first and foremost, cheating yourself from an opportunity to learn from your difficulties and your mistakes as you grow as a writer. These bots can do a lot of things, but they will never bring out your voice as a storyteller and the more you rely on them the more you postpone developing your own skill.

My 2c, in as kind a way as possible despite whatever tone you might infer from the words.

Why would I read it if you couldn't be bothered to write it? Why are you writing anything if you don't want to develop your writing skills?

If you're just writing for yourself, go nuts.
If you post it saying 'I used AI to write it', then don't be surprised when people either react badly or straight up ignore it. AI is seldom actually intelligent and is mostly a generator of often stolen writings anyways, so that might also be a sensitive issue with other writers who might see it.
