Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

So I guess trigger warnings are now a thing in books, and I came across my first one the other day. It was very vague "mentions of mild, non-graphic sexual harassment" (which isn't something that really bothers me in fiction). But I spent the entire book wondering if every interaction the female lead had with a male character was going to include sexual harassment. The male character put his hand on her shoulder, and she shrugged it off, did the author consider that harassment? The female lead did mention that she slept with a knife under her pillow because she used to live in a workhouse and she learned she needed to defend herself "the hard way." That was the only time in the book that I felt like sexual harassment was even hinted at. I spent so much time expecting/anticipating the harassment that I didn't enjoy the book at all. Have we reached a point in society where the mere mention of unpleasant things warrants a trigger warning?

Have you read the news lately? Seems like everything is "WARNING: DISTRESSING" or something.
