Depression

(Anonymous) 2024-02-23 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I can't even with this year. I think we're all pretty much resigned to courts finishing stripping us of all rights in favor of billionaires, and Trump getting his second term. I don't see how we can carry on like this. It is just so depressing.

There was just one good decision from the SC. Or at least, one good decline to take a decision.

No, it isn't. But it is something. At this point I'll take even a small victory.

nayrt but I get it. I know things are frustrating but better to move in the correct direction (tired of saying "right" because I sure as hell don't mean politically right) even a little than give up because one decision didn't unfuck everything. It's tiring to keep at everything but it's necessary because the alternative is shit.

Wisconsin's Congressional maps have been approved, and the districts are now more competitive/less gerrymandered.

Depressing that Trump 24 is pretty much a sure thing at this point.

Re: Depression

(Anonymous) 2024-02-23 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
It is not a sure thing.

It's basically a coinflip.

The McDonald's and Starbucks boycotts are making visible dents in sales. This is the power held by the number of people who will refuse to vote because both candidates support genocide.

If governments worked like burger joints, you’d almost have a point.

That could possibly be made up by people who are upset by the erosion of rights here in the US.

Those are all the same people who already would have voted blue. The others who would have voted blue want us to lose our rights and want to lose theirs too because that's how they choose to deal with the guilt of being citizens of a country that supports genocide.

No offense, but you sound crazy.

I mean, there are a lot of points that we could get into here but the most important one by far is: it is February. The election is in November. That is a long time and we do not know what will happen.

This also means there is still some time to effect various outcomes. Heck, it's even enough time to find news reporting that uses less emotionally loaded languages and get in the habit of supporting those publications.

I genuinely have no idea what you're trying to imply here.

Re: Depression

AYRT

I'm talking about adjusting news consumption. Given that many news outlets across the spectrum are geared to lean into negative biases, there's a lot of reporting that focuses on bleak events AND covers them with very loaded language. Not all outlets do this, though, but it can take time to find this less emotional reporting and engage with it regularly.

If one starts looking for this now, their information sphere can be less stressful in a matter of months. Such a change can help alleviate some aspects of depression.

Tell Hamas to quit genociding Israelis.
Your boycotts are as useless as farts in the wind.

Tell Israelis to quit genociding Palestinians.

Re: Depression

(Anonymous) 2024-02-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
They're not "my" boycotts. I'm not participating in them. I'm worried that the people who are performatively participating will also make the performative choice not to vote. But it figures someone who thinks Israelis are currently the ones being genocided wouldn't have the reading comprehension to get that.

DA

I'm worried that the people who are performatively participating will also make the performative choice not to vote.

To me, this is actually the most understandable concern in this entire thread.

Yeah. It's hard being invisibly disabled and alone. And I live in one of the less offensive countries.

Folks lived and loved and found joy during the Black Death.

Stuff sucks now and you and your life and your feelings matter.

Nothing is set in stone, we can always improve.
