Putting sequels on Patreon is bullshit, I agree. But I'm not sure it's that easy to find a WFH job that will actually pay more than peanuts.

On the other hand, I can't imagine monetizing fanfic would be very lucrative, either, unless you were a big deal in your niche of choice. Plenty of people don't read unfinished fic because they don't want to be disappointed; I expect those people would be pretty resistant to paying a monthly fee for an ongoing story that may or may not be finished. Also, the part where the part of fandom that's okay with monetizing fic skews young; many of them may not be able to afford to pay in the first place, and certainly not for several different writers.

Depends on if you have skills. There are lots of WFH jobs out there that pay well, but they tend to require specific skills.
