(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 12:52 am (UTC)(link)Even leaving the cabin and just wandering the immediate area wouldn't be sufficient. I left my condo to walk outside during the pandemic, and after a couple months I was struggling mentally. I learned quickly that staying in one area is not something I can deal with all that well.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 01:02 am (UTC)(link)How do you deal with this? Do you move a lot, take long vacations or simple week-end outings are sufficient for you?
I'm curious!

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 01:07 am (UTC)(link)It depends on my schedule, but I generally take two big vacations (traveling over 300 miles away) per year and have several weekend outings scattered all over the calendar. Plus once my husband's parents are gone, we will be free to move about more.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 01:24 am (UTC)(link)I do really want to move house and decorate a new place, though.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 01:28 am (UTC)(link)We'll see if that happens to me. I have my doubts about that, if both sides of my family are any indication. The vast majority of my family members have spent multiple decades traveling in varying capacities (long RV trips, cruises, going abroad). It's practically a tradition at this point.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)I have wanderlust but I'm also poor. So I'm just stuck at home miserable.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 01:54 am (UTC)(link)Everyone's middle class, oddly enough. Plus my dad's family is spread out and generally happy to let people stay over, which made travel relatively inexpensive in my childhood. In adulthood, my husband and I both have jobs that pay decently enough, and we tend to do a lot of free activities in the cities we visit (as we tend to prefer urban vacations; hooray for public transit!).

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 07:53 am (UTC)(link)Relatable. People who equate "you can travel legally" with "you MUST be rich" tend to have been mislad by the tourism industry, which promotes a stereotype of what to do when you travel that gets people to overspend on everything.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)Also many other privileges in play:
Location: intercity travel is muuuuch cheaper and easier in Europe & in the USA NE corridor
Connections: Having family/friends to stay with once you get there
Employment: having a job that lets you take time off with no loss of income/having a job that pays you above your living expenses OR BOTH
etc etc
My wife and I have good paying jobs that give us paid time off, but we live in a place where it's expensive AF to travel. I'm expected to fly home for my grandmother's 90th, and I've started re-arranging my budget so I can save up for it. Cruises and going abroad? LOLNO.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)I've been to Las Vegas both during tourist season and during the off season and the trip during the off season cost way less than half what the trip in tourist season did.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 07:08 am (UTC)(link)I also have wonderlust but I am poor. And not really healthy. And have aviophobia that have got really really bad in last years.
So I take train or bus to closest towns. I make small trips on weekends. Some local museum? Here I go. Pretty church? Fuck yeah! Weird abandoned village? OK, I am taking my friends for that.
We have a really big museum 40 km/25 miles outside the city and I find it funny going regulary. Or I wonder around.
But of course I am lucky enough because I live in a major city.
I know a lot of people who take to hiking.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 11:21 am (UTC)(link)I'm trying to go wandering again this year for a handful of days at a time to see if I still like it. If I don't enjoy it, I'm dialing it down again to a couple of days.
But yes to wanting to move house and decorating a new home. Or at least redecorating the current place.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 01:09 am (UTC)(link)As I mentioned to the other anon, I take a fair number of vacations far from home. I have a good amount of vacation time available at my disposal.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 12:48 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I think the pandemic kind how showed ourselves who could potentially live in a cabin or remote island by themselves and who would be driven crazy fairly fast.
I personally think I could live in the cabin by myself for months before suffering any isolation issues. The pandemic and forced quarantine periods had me thriving and my idea of vacation is cutting off all communication channels for 5+ days and never leave my home.
I don't think that's a good thing for me, though.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)Sorry, I'm not angry at individuals or anything, just the situation. I still haven't gotten a vacation, so I'm a little crisp at the edges.
Re: tangent
(Anonymous) 2024-03-02 01:00 am (UTC)(link)I stayed at home, sure, but in the meantime I also lost my job and all my career prospect with it (still not recovered from that lol), I then had to move back to my home country because I couldn't renew my working visa oh but before that I was actually blocked in that foreign country for more than a year and couldn't visit my family while my parents got sick and my dad was in ER for two weeks. :/
But at least I got to stay home by myself and could de-compress.
So yeah... covid has been rough to everyone but in a different manner.
I'm very sorry you still had no chance to take a proper vacation. I hope you'll get one soon!
All the best to you. <3

On top of that people in my household had to go to work. I was scared for them but also jealous af. And despite quarantine I had covid like 4 or 5 times. All of us mild cases thankfully. But. Yeah.
