What stupid things are you excited about?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2024-03-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Scary Game Squad just released Part 1 of their Signalis play through. For once, I'll be able to watch them play a game that I have played (highly recommend it). Just don't know if I want to watch it now or wait for all the parts to be uploaded.

Awesome! All my subscribed fics are probably abandoned because I am cursed. So I'd love even one chapter.

I'm going home for my grandmother's 90th birthday and I've decided to treat myself and save up for first class. It will be the first time I've ever flown anything but the cheapest seats, so I'm excited.

It totally makes a difference. I've gotten some free upgrades back in the day when they used to do those due to flying so many miles. And on anything longer than a couple hour flight, it really does make a big difference.

Sleep tonight. Getting a massage on Saturday. A rusty orange blazer that I ordered is coming in the mail tomorrow. I really hope it fits because I love the color so much.

I ordered a Lego set recently, the Medieval Town Square, and it’s getting delivered tomorrow. I’m so indescribably excited! I love the Castle Lego line and have a whole giant display. I even have two fake brand sets because Lego abandoned their Castle theme for a very long time. I have some Pirates and modern Vikings stuff mixed in so tomorrow I need to rearrange everything and make a new display for the Pirates and Vikings to fit the new set as well as a bunch of small world building bits that have been removed to make space.

This is the set I ordered. They did an amazing trailer for it on the Lego Facebook page but sadly I haven’t found it anywhere else to share it.

That is so many pieces! I don't have the patience for that (unless I could build over a year or so).

I'm so stoked for Elden Ring DLC that whenever I read the word 'frenzy' I start giggling. Doesn't matter what the 'frenzy' is actually referring to in any given text, mind automatically goes to Elden Ring. Caught myself doing that goofy Gandalf nod just a few moments ago while finishing The Shallows by Nicholas Carr.

Oh that sounds exciting! Elden Ring has been in my Steam wishlist since prelaunch but even though it’s gone on sale a couple times, I haven’t pulled the trigger. Definitely let us know how it is once you get to play!

Prophet - Novel (2023) Anyone reading? SPOILERS

[personal profile] tabaqui 2024-03-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
So, I just finished this novel and...i dunno. It was good; the story was interesting, the premise pretty unique, the characters worth listening to.

But, it seems like it was really hyped and I'm just not feeling the hype. It wasn't THAT great, that ground breaking (at all ground breaking?), that novel. ALSO - here come the
SPOILERS!!!

The main m/m 'ship of the book (the only m/m 'ship of the book) take over 400 pages to get to an actual acknowledgment of their feelings for each other. We get a single kiss and then...fade to black. ARGH. It just annoyed me.

I think the most talked about books tend to generate hype and kinda snowball because they’re more likely to be read by people don’t read very much for leisure. So tired tropes to an avid reader are sometimes (I think maybe even often) groundbreaking, very shiny new things for those readers. There’s nothing wrong with that! Everyone should experience that from media many times in their lives. But for me it means that popular books tend to be pretty average or even blah compared to everything else I’ve read.

Do you ever highlight, take notes, or just generally write in books you are reading?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-06 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Passing curiosity. If so, what kind of things do you most often highlight or take notes of when reading?

With nonfiction, definitely.

I both take notes and underline/bracket sections that stick out or that I find important. I've also been known to write brief impressions in the margins.

I do in my textbooks but never in any other physical copies. I may write a note on a scrap of paper and use it as that book’s forever bookmark.
I mostly read digital copies now and I’m the Highlight Queen on my Kindle. I love that I can hide or even erase them if I want, but the best thing is being able to browse or search my whole library for things. That way I don’t have to remember where exactly I read it in order to find it again.

No.

I didn't get to actually own many books growing up so writing in books or doing anything to damage books is something I don't do.

No. I still have the mindset of "you may have to resell this someday, keep it in as prostine condition as possible."

I'll do this with books I plan to review publicly.

I have like... one nonfiction book I started highlighting in and then I lost track of the highlighter I was using and didn't want to suddenly switch colors so I never finished the book.

With fiction, what I do is... well, I tend to take a picture of the page with my phone and then transfer lines that strike me down later in my commonplace book-- it's a mix of lines that are Important, where I want to track things I think might be foreshadowing and then see if I'm right, pore back over them with full knowledge of what they were leading to. Other times it's lines I wish I'd written, where I just want to be able to go back and read them, whether it's especially funny or moving or just really good description/character work. I'm trying to really get into close reading as a guy whose memory is shit. Like, yeah, I'm reading the books I read for fun, as an adult, but I *want* to study good writing, and enjoyable writing, as both a reader and a writer!

One book I haven't transferred all my notes about, I wound up basically snapping pictures of every single scene a particular character was in because I knew something was up with them, and I was still surprised by the reveal of what that thing was, but once I got to that point, I was really happy that I had known to pay attention to them because now I could easily go back and re-read everything setting that reveal up! And it's just really fun for me.
