What is isekei?

Not OP

You have fallen asleep/been killed/whatever and wake up as a character in the last video game/book/movie/tv show you watched. Now you have to survive and find your way through the plot already knowing how things are supposed to go. Bonus points if you find yourself in place of the villain and throw everything out of wack.

More bonus points if the plot is completely off the rails, and your foreknowledge doesn't work like you think it should.

That's only a subgenre of Isekai. As long as someone from "our" world is transported to another world (it doesn't have to be a fictional world in theirs), it's Isekai.

Japanese term for "other world" - a genre of fantasy where someone from one world is yanked into another against their will and has to deal with it. Usually a modern person into a fantasy setting but not always. Technically, Wizard of Oz is in this genre! But it's really popular in Japanese media. And fanfic lol.
