It was never going to be about Rogue. The original idea was actually about Wolverine first joining to help the X Men fight Magneto. But that whole deal fell apart so when they started talking again about making an X Men movie, they decided to include that. They ultimately used everything from the very first idea in the later movies, including Trask and the Sentinels.

This. That might have been one of the things that was pitched in the very beginning, but it wasn't what they chose to go with.

There were a few scripts written over like a decade before the one they went with. None were about Rogue. She wasn’t even included in some of the lineups that they considered. The movie (and trilogy) we got had a lot more Rogue than originally planned.
