It's all fake and made up so.

.... forensics is real....

(Anonymous) 2024-03-30 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes and no. It does exist. It is not remotely as accurate as it used to be believed it was. Even something as basic as fingerprints has been shown to have lots of error and not to be as accurate as it was believed previously.

So.. yes, then. Just because some of the field has turned out to be bunk doesn't mean the stuff that has been proven to work with a high accuracy rate is suddenly NOT forensics.

Forensics in reality is mostly a bunch of made up BS that quacks spout on the witness stand so the justice system can get convictions because police are too goddamn dumb to actually solve most crimes without breaking the law or lying.

It's fun in fiction, though.

Like, I'm not gonna dispute that most of the stuff in the justice system is shit. But there are forensics that are scientific, with a high accuracy rate, that are real. Whether or not the justice system actually puts in the money and effort to use them appropriately is an entirely different conversation.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-30 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Which things specifically?

Blood splatter analysis? Arson science? 911 call analysis?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-30 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Chromatography, Toxicology, Aerial Photography, Entomology, Limnology, etc etc.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think you're talking about the fucked up justice system and its offshoots, not forensic science. If it can't be replicated it's not science (see bite marks, blood splatter etc.) Actual forensics is much slower and less dramatic but it's very much a real science.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
But all of that gets lumped into "forensic science", even the totally made up fake pseudo-science parts. No one is demarcating the stuff that has a scientific basis from the stuff that is totally made up bullshit, because the purpose of the entire endeavor is to convict people and no one cares if it's actually real if it serves that function. Forensic science is inseparable from the justice system. Forensic science is completely fine with fucking quacks going up and getting people convicted of murder in hundreds or thousands of trials.

i know you're right anon but this is a total buzzkill lol. oh well, someone's gotta say it!

DA

No, it's not. The JUSTICE SYSTEM is fine with quacks going up and getting people convicted for murder.

Forensics is just a very, very young science. It's going through the phase of weeding out things that we thought worked with better science. This is a process that every science goes through, btw. It has abandoned bullet-lead analysis that has been proven not to work. Forensic dentistry is on it's way out, as the more recent studies with better controls have called the earlier studies into question. The only cure for bad science is more science.

And science takes time.

You'd be smart enough to solve them though, right? Just like reddit was smart enough to find the Boston bomber?
