I feel ya buddy.

"You'll always have the original!"

Maybe I won't! Maybe the new will overshadow the old and drown out the fandom I love! You don't fucking know!

So much this. New canon means lots of new fanfic incorporating that canon, so even if you don't watch the new stuff, it's still inescapable.

OP

You get it. Already, even in fics set in the earlier parts of the storyline long before Fav dies, it's become trendy to put in details foreshadowing Fav's future canon death. And I HATE IT SO MUCH.

Yes! It's fucking overshadows.
For example I liked Good Omens book and I liked seeing some occasional art and theories etc. I don't really like GO tv show and I really don't like the casting. I was annoyed just from seeing Tennant's face for some time. I had to block this tag in every way. So now I don't have little cute book illustrations with different fanon looks and Queen music compilations.

Oh thank god, I'm not alone! T_T

AYRT
casting choices you don't agree with are the worst! If I don't like the show I just can choose not to watch it (and I didn't watch season 2. Season 1 held no charm for me so) Even for fics it's managable. But you can't get away from fanart and edits if you want to stay in fandom. (I didn't).

I loathe Tennant in everything I have seen him in so far, besides narrating the How to Train Your Dragon books. He is *terrible* as Crowley, and the effect they used for his eyes is also stupidly OTT. And now, yeah, once there is a 'canon' appearance it's hard to get away from it in fanworks so every one is a teeth-grinding reminder of the show's incarnations *sigh*

The thing is I don't even dislike him as an actor, I just really hate him as Crowley.
Everyone call me nitpicky for this but I was so annoyed that they always have the same bodies. This thing was so precious to me in the book and it could have been such a fun sandbox in the show.

I like the TV version okay, but I prefer the book versions of the characters, and I do not like the TV show fans very much. It's not exactly their fault that the TV version only included half of certain jokes (like never explaining that the Queen music in the car has nothing to do with Crowley's taste in music, or leaving out the hints that the third baby lived), but the erroneous assumptions built from the absence of the full picture still annoy me. So does the influx of fans who aren't even trying to approach the characters with any thought or nuance.

Worse still, people who clearly haven't read the book will tag their fanfic as both the book and TV versions, so even finding book canon fic is a crapshoot.

Yeah, show's fans are also annoy me. I was open to enjoying fandom despite being not a TV fan, but I am too old and too cranky and too nerdy for this

I laugh at these people, so lucky to not have creators who have never randomly retconned shit, because otherwise the new stories don't work.

Thanks guys, I feel so seen.

I’ve had this happen with three of my faves and it sucks! One had it happen twice, the fandom kinda evened out after the first time but then a new adaptation came along and absolutely obliterated everything else. The fandom didn’t survive, partly because LJ died while all that was going on.
