I know sometimes the issue of feedback vs no feedback gets framed as like… do you write because you have something you want to get onto the page, or do you write for the extrinsic motivation of getting comments? But whenever I see these conversations, I want to bring up a third way of looking at this, which is that fic can be a way of sharing your feelings about canon and making connections with other fans. Sometimes I miss that social aspect of fanfic, like when we’d all get chatty in the comments sections and treat it like book club.

I mean, sure, you can also post headcanons and meta and things and get discussion going that way. But sometimes fanfic does what those other things can’t. Like it tugs on different emotions, and reveals different sides of ships and characters.

It still happens sometimes in the comments, but it's between author and reader, not between readers. The last meta I saw was on Tumblr. It's still alive btw.
