I miss livejournal communities back when I use to post my fanfics on there. Always got a response because creating fanworks for the community was actually fun.

Now strangers treat fanfic writers as soulless content providers, and lord help you if you dare to bitch about it here on FS.

So annoyed with the self righteous fic writers who talk about the torture of being treated like content creators.

Your second paragraph sounds like an angry troll, but I actually agree on the first. LJ just had a very close community feel and the talk around fic was way more active and fun. I mean there was wank, it wasn't perfect, but it overall felt like fandom was more a community or group activity.

Same, nonny. It's a weird, bad change in fandom culture.

I haven't wanted to say anything on my fandom socials, but I've been writing fic for 17 years now, and this is the least interaction my fics have gotten in that amount of time. I'm writing & publishing new stuff! It's just hardly anyone is engaging with it. My two most-recently-published stories both currently have zero (0) comments. Even with my stable of older fics, I've received a grand total of three comments in the past two months. I'm writing what I want to write, and I know there's *some* audience for it. I wonder sometimes if it's worth it, though. If I have an idea for a story, I can just rotate it around in my mind to entertain myself; I don't have to put in the work of writing, editing, and publishing it. :P

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I used to get more comments too, but I'm pretty happy with kudos, to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
No one comments these days... Something to consider, some people read only long/finished fics. Not sure if you want to write for them thought.

I write and reply because I have something to say, not because I need validation. I put my fic out in the world as a nice final move - posting it makes it really feel finished so I can then move on to the next thing.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, complaining at people who, by definition, already don't care enough to leave you feedback won't make them change their mind and do it.

And the truth is that if a creator currently isn't inspiring anyone to give them feedback, then it's unlikely that them choosing to stop will, or has, upset anyone very much. Even if they'd very much like it if people were upset.

Sorry. Not trying to be mean to you here. It just is how it is.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think you missed the point of the secret, nonny. Feedback = more content. Even if content is just recs on fs.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Because why make an effort for no reward?"

... because I had an idea for a thing that I really wanted to make reality? Seriously, when did fandom become all about how much attention you get instead of "I want to make this thing and so I will post the thing so that other people can also enjoy it if they want"?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
So you get no comments and no kudos. Are you going to keep taking the time out of your day to post? What if Fandom A gives you lots of kudos and comments and Fandom B not so many. What fandom will you write for?

I know sometimes the issue of feedback vs no feedback gets framed as like… do you write because you have something you want to get onto the page, or do you write for the extrinsic motivation of getting comments? But whenever I see these conversations, I want to bring up a third way of looking at this, which is that fic can be a way of sharing your feelings about canon and making connections with other fans. Sometimes I miss that social aspect of fanfic, like when we’d all get chatty in the comments sections and treat it like book club.

I mean, sure, you can also post headcanons and meta and things and get discussion going that way. But sometimes fanfic does what those other things can’t. Like it tugs on different emotions, and reveals different sides of ships and characters.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
It still happens sometimes in the comments, but it's between author and reader, not between readers. The last meta I saw was on Tumblr. It's still alive btw.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Idk man when I get inspiration for a fic it sits in my head non stop until I purge it by literally writing it out. If I think it’s okay I post it because others might enjoy it too.

I’ve got plenty of short snippets and stories that won’t see beyond my computer because they’re unfinished, completely self indulgent or so daft I don’t think others will like them. But otherwise I post my fic for fun. Any attention I do get is nice but I really don’t need external validation to write and me continuing to write is not predicated on that. I could have the most popular fic in a fandom but if that fic purges the fandom itch then no amount of comments or kudos will make me write more for that fandom.

I go where the fanfic bunnies lead me.

I'm glad I have a discord comm for one fandom where we can hype each other up and talk about fics together, because it can get real lonely out there! Whenever I write fic for a fandom I don't have friends in, I'm sending it out kind of expecting no engagement.

I do comment when I can find fics for my smaller fandoms and rarepairs but there's not always a way to like... befriend those people and keep up with them, like there would have been back in the lj days.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I really don’t care if everyone or no one reads my stuff. That isn’t a false bravado or anything; I don’t care. I write the stories that come to mind and polish them up the way I like and then I post them for people to love, hate, or ignore. I like getting kudos emails but don’t notice when I go a long stretch without them until I get a new one. And I never reply to comments. I can’t write upon request and I’m not going to change what, how, or when I write based on the audience; it’s all based on what is inside my head. If I’m going to be inspired, that will come from the source material. So good for the readers if they like my stuff but it doesn’t change anything for me.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I'm the same way. I occasionally reply to kind comments. And it makes me very happy to hear my fic made a reader's day. But I really just write the fic I want to write, and it's a bonus for me that sometimes other people enjoy reading it.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
So why bother posting? Whould you post if you get no kudos?

I've gotten better about leaving comments as well as kudos and it's made the whole thing more fun.

Yeah, I don't bother reccing on fs.

to lily pad: I don't follow the recs that are just a list of links. I know I'll get all the info I could want once I click on the link but it grates on my Millennial soul to click context-less links.

I mostly read fic late at night on my iPad, no way am I going to do anything beyond clicking the like/bookmark/kudos button. Since most authors just want gushing, fellating praise rather than anything beyond that, why bother? They'll only get offended and cry about it, and then leave their stuff as a WIP anyway, whether I praise them or not. Not that I'm bitter or anything.
