Well the answer we got was there was no difference, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my god why are you like this

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean not blindly accepting your pronouncements? Because you are unable to define an ebook, or online fiction, in a way that excludes online fanfic. That is why, and you are resorting to insults in your desperation.

NAYRT

Wrong person, you mean that comment for me. And I have. You just don't want to accept it.

Your fanfiction is not a book.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You were told. You tried to bring up a book that was published and had a copyright like a gotcha. You failed because your book doesn't even meet your silly definition.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Your argument is just because I told you so?
Not a great one.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

No. They're saying that this whole thing was already explained to you. "You were told." You brought up something that didn't actually refute it, and now refuse to admit you were wrong.

Your fanfiction is not a book.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, you just don't (want to) understand it because you have been steeped in wattpad culture and are getting a culture shock and holding on so tightly to what you know is wrong because you don't want to change.

Your fanfiction isn't a book.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If it is over 40000 words, it is. If it is under that, it is just a short story or novella. It is just a badly written one that you can't profit off of. OF course, there are plenty books that are the same as that too.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Those are terms for books. Fanfiction is not a book.

It's not a matter of if you actually DO profit off of it. It's a matter of it you can legally profit off of it. You can do that for books. You cannot for fanfiction.

Your fanfiction is not a book.

When wattpad users upload their fic does it say "publish"? Maybe that is why they are so confused?

Re: nayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
They also call them books. Which is why we're in this mess.

Re: nayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they are. I don't know why you aren't getting this.

The adults are talking.

Re: nayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish. We wouldn't be having this conversation if we were all adults. :(

Re: nayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they're not. I don't know why you aren't getting this.

Just because you don't like wattpad, doesn't mean that the fiction published on it isn't a book. Same as the long form fiction on AO3. It is text, it is fiction, it is available to all, it is chaptered, it is a book. Whether it is wattpad, ao3, the pit, or your own website, you still published it.

Books are copyrightable. Fanfiction is not.

Your fanfiction is not a book.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-11 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Not all books are copyrightable.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-11 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
If it were written today, and could be copyrighted, it's a book, hence "copyrightable". If it were written today and could NOT be copyrighted, it's fucking fanfiction. Get over it.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-11 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Which books? Name some.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Tom Brown's School Days.

DA

I am an Old and have never been on Wattpad, and don’t see what the big deal is about reviewing fanfic on Goodreads. Could we stop with the ad hominem attacks? We don’t have to eat our young — and who knows if the OP actually even is young.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-11 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Because goodreads is a review site for books. By adding reviews of fanfiction it blurs the line between legally published works (for profit) and grey-area fanfiction (non-profit). This harms the entirety of fandom.
