To be fair, some teenagers in history have been geniuses.

Yeah, it's disappointing, horrifying and infuriating when nobody will rock the damn boat, not even to save and protect their most vulnerable.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-12 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
That...isn't what happened?

Depends on what you mean by criminals. I had a great uncle who, during prohibition, was a bootlegger and rumrunner. The local sheriff knew and never arrested him, but he did tell him that they had put a lien on his house, so he never moved even though he wanted to. When he was in his 60s he finally decided to just pay the lien so he could move to the city and found out there never was a lien. The entire family teased him about it until the day he died. And again at the funeral. XD

One of my second cousins is, but I never met him.

Not a blood relative but my aunt's best friend's daughter was pardoned by Trump, which is at least as bad as what she went to prison for, frankly.

I personally have pirated a lot of media and once got a citation for reckless driving that I didn't deserve.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-12 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, I wondered if that was the case. Harriet Walter played a fantastically bitchy Fanny Dashwood, that's for sure.

Funnily enough, that one is actually my favorite episode of the series. I loved the place of parody with there being communication differences between "heroes" and the guys just doing background stuff.

Same!

I've done a bit of speeding. Never been caught, though.

I know a few of my elderly uncles drove home when they should have had a designated driver...in the 1980s.

Prohibition was such stupid legislation that I have immense respect for anybody who broke that law.

Almost half the people who came to Australia in my family were convicts so

I have an ancestor from Ireland who stole a cow with her sister and mother to escape the famine and I adore that for her. What an Irish way to come out.

My dad was a schizophrenic drug addict and was arrested wearing body armor and carrying guns loaded with armor-piercing rounds. At least one of the guns was illegally modified to be fully automatic.

My parents farmed and sold weed in the 80s and apparently supplied some rock bands in LA for awhile.

My mom smuggled cocaine once.

My mom's dad raped all three of his children and went to jail in his 70s for trying to kidnap and rape his paper delivery boy.

My parents were the last known people to see a missing person alive. After my dad died I asked my mom if they'd killed him (because it was when they were weed farmers) and she said no, she thought one of the boyfriends/lovers of missing dude's wife (who'd been found dead years before with missing dude the prime suspect) had finally caught up with him. Still not sure she wasn't covering up for my dad, but they're both dead now so idk.

... I jaywalk sometimes, and I've made audio bootlegs of a couple musicals.

Anyone know what are they talking about?

Honestly, as a cancer survivor, one of the most satisfying things in the world is being able to say, "Oh, it was the cancer," to people being mean to me.

A doctor: why are you so fat?
Me: cancer, it's right there in my medical history
A doctor: *shuts up for once*

A person in the supermarket: why are you still wearing a mask?
Me: Cancer.
A person in the supermarket: Uh, um, um, okay...

(Anonymous) 2024-04-12 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
We didn't know that at the time!

In the book, there was a character named Caleb. In the show, they made that character a woman named Christina. I liked that, but it wasn't a great show after the first 2 episodes.

Yeah, there were a few Irish convicts in my maternal grandmother's family, and she lived long enough to see the culture shift from "never tell anyone" to people becoming proud of their history!

Which is not necessarily a *bad* thing, sustaining pollinators-- unless you're allergic to bee stings, I suppose. (I say "suppose" because I don't know if you'll necessarily end up in overly-close contact with the bees.)

SA

It's not how the word is being used in context. "A natural" is another translation that never gets used and is clearly more suitable than "genius."

I am not good with years today.
Heh, guessed region in number 1 but mixed up country a bit. Number 4 is easy but good luck pinpointing this town. Number 5 is a repeat

I'm not implying that's a bad thing, some people want to attract bees.

one of my favorite TV shows is Boardwalk Empire which dealt with that subject extensively.

I think they could have played the "white women also contributed to black oppression in order to alleviate their own" in a way that didn't seem less thoughtful that the book. That those secret societies and lodges being all-male in membership (if not in action) is pretty important to their legacy. The KKK pretending to defend ~their women~ doesn't work as a polite fiction if there are women leading it, no matter how much white women might have resented being denied power in it. It also meant that Ruby's ending also felt less thoughtful (and considering in the original ruby decided to be white, there was a lot of room for something interesting there). which was disappointing because i think the show was more thoughtful in a a lot of ways.

My mum took great pleasure in, as she put it, 'playing the cancer card'. She said she might as well get some benefit from it while she could.
