Ask 'em.

Was the United States involved in active military conflicts between the end of Vietnam and the election of Ronnie Reagan?

These might help.

Whoa. Just reading the wiki list of wars you linked and realizing I am woefully ignorant of most of them. History isn't my best subject, military history even less so, but still. Guess I've got some reading to do.

What a random coincidence but I was *just* reading about Vietnam. Not a topic I read often so its just funny.

The Lion King - how do people think about the different animals?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I’m curious, What was your understanding of the hyenas and lions in The Lion King?

What makes the hyenas “the bad guys”? Do you think of them as hunters or as scavengers?

What makes the lions (besides Scar) “the good guys”? What does it mean for Mufasa to rule over the Pride Lands?

[all of this brought to you by an interaction with someone who had clearly thought about the movie a lot more than I ever have before]

This questions confuses me because I just think of them as the movie framed them. The hyenas were greedy and violent in the movie so they are bad guys. Plus the goose step marching, lol. The lions were good because they were our heroes.

Though, historically I can why those animals were chosen. Lions are "kings" of the jungle and have been associated with royalty for forever. Hyenas (unfairly) have many negative stereotypes like being scavengers. Or superstitions like being familiars for witch doctors. Plus they do make some creepy ass noises.

Okay, that was pretty much my view… As you say, lions were good because they are the heroes and protagonists. Hyenas were bad because they threatened Simba and allied with Scar, who threatened Mufasa.

The person I was talking to was very adamant that the hyenas are bad because they overhunt and kill for sport rather than to eat. That is disrupts the circle of life. And the lions are good because they only eat enough to keep the ecosystem balanced and keep other predators from coming into the Pride Lands.

And I just didn’t remember that being clearly established in the movie. But it has been a very long time.

Oh, no. That is definitely part of it. The hyenas in the movie are supposed to be gluttonous. They (and Scar) don't respect the circle of life. In a deleted song (it is in the broadway version), Nala tells Scar that the hyenas are forcing the lionesses to over hunt. https://youtu.be/PrDTF7ytycE?si=fcA9ACB4Sqovcg5R

This. People who treat the characters like real lions/hyenas, etc. annoy me. Like when people talk about how because of how real lions behave, Scar must have slept with Nala. No. Just. These aren't real lions.

Yeah, if this was real, Scar would have killed Nala pretty quickly while still a cub.

going anon because I don't want [personal profile] kaijinscendre to get pissed off at me but one reason I am not a fan of that movie is the very first scene has elephants kissing a lion's ass. IRL an elephant can kill a lion with one good stomp or swat with its trunk which is why lions in the wild give elephants lots of room.

Lol, why would I be mad? Of course a full grown elephant can kill a lion. Hell, hyenas harass (and kill) lions all the time. It isn't a documentary.

DA but I am laughing at the idea that you have a reputation for attacking people for nature inaccuracies in cartoon movies.

"if we bow down low enough maybe the lions won't eat us."
"Mwamba, you're the most naive antelope I ever met."

The lions might eat us, but the hyena will torture us first. At the end of the day, they are still carnivores, and we are still prey.

At some point you just got to realize what you are, and where your place on the ladder is. Pick the person with the lightest feet to step on you, that is all you can do.

Has anyone actually found something that ACTUALLY keeps stray cats out of your yard? They are destroying my raised garden bed. And the males are spraying everywhere. They even got under the netting I put down to protect my beans. I don't want to have animal control pick them up but I am at the end of my rope.

There are automatic water sprayers you can get that spray when they sense movement. Only problem is humans will get sprayed too. But they do tend to work decently well.

google is telling me cats hate these smells: rosemary, thyme, lavender, citrus, peppermint & vinegar

here's a link for homemade cat repellent if you want to try it

Please do have animal control pick them up. Stray cats are so horribly destructive to native wildlife.
