I'd wager a guess that most of us did that as a teen. I also used to write my faves as thinky veiled self inserts. I didn't realize I was doing that at the time, but I totally was. I think its pretty normal as a teen and a new writer.

China is trying to convince women to have more children, so it makes sense to utilize that trope.

Is it weird that as we've gotten less permissive about speech, we've gotten more permissive about sex?

It's not the kind of show OP was talking about, but TBH, I still love 'Cheers.' It feels very true to life.

Not AYRT

I too would like to know this. Are they looking for a more detailed rating system (something like what Writing.com has)? Or are they actually looking at certain topics to be deprioritized?

AYRT.

I get teens doing it because everything does feel very dramatic as a teen, I remember thinking every hurt I suffered was the worst y'know? So that bleeding over into writing checks out(never mind being a teen writer meant I was still learning, thus writing mistakes abound). But I've known plenty of adult writers who wrote completely capable and competent adult characters with the emotional stability of a 12 year old. Maybe it's a catharsis thing I don't know really, but I do know that I hate it every time it happens.

I'm not entirely sure we've gotten more permissive about sex, at least at scale.

Oh my gawd this reminds me of a fave of mine who's canonically 21. Popular author headcanons her as "over 25" because she thinks the character is "too mature" to be 21, and yet...writes her like she's a moody 15-year-old rather than an adult. It's bizarre, but I think it'd be less bizarre if the author hadn't gone around opining about the character's maturity level.

I love him!

I just miss genre with small stakes. It feels like the world or universe or the fabric of reality always has to be at risk.

Wattpad's tags are terrible. Good luck finding anything.

Posting fic on AO3 is a long game. It's an archive, not an endless scroll. Authors need to tag appropriately and be patient. They're probably too used to instant gratification from Wattpad.

I miss episodic, weekly release TV shows where the seasons run 24+ episodes or something like that. I mean sure, there's always filler and not great episodes, but you know what? Having a limited run season doesn't seem to guarantee quality or a coherent story arc even when there are only 4-10 episodes, so... /shrug

Mostly I miss TV that had standalone episodes so you could drop in and watch, then drift away and come back and still mostly understand what's going on. I'm also not always impressed by the (short) season-long plot arcs shows come up with.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I would find that cute (because I like Penelope!) but it's so brief I don't even think of that as a cross over. I'd be annoyed if such a fic were described as a crossover, because I'd go into it expecting a lot more interaction between the two fandoms/characters and just having one reference feels like a let down.

I still honestly enjoy The Brady Bunch.

I think many shows hold up if you go in with the knowledge of the era they were written in.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss filler episodes. They gave the plot time to breath and fleshed out the characters.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT.

Oh wow, yeah that's wild. 21 is still young for sure, but they're adults, they've even had a few years of being an adult like they're either in uni/further education or have a job. I'm not gonna say that every 21 year old in the pinnacle of maturity, but on average the dumb shit they'll do won't be the same as a 15 year old's dumb shit, and their emotional regulation levels will be different.

You can still write a character as being naive in certain respects at 21 depending on their childhood imo, but writing them like an average moody teen is bizarre.

DA - I know exactly what you're talking about. The only thing I can figure is it is (or similar to) a kink. There is this one author that just loves to make Steve Rogers into a crying child by the end of all their fic. It was bizarre. At first I thought they were just young but then it turns out they were a married woman with grown children? (Mentioned in aithors notes.) So I guess she just has a kink for turning strong characters into helpless children. More power to her, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Over what timeframe?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I'd see that as an easter egg unless it's tagged as a crossover.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
DA I'd feel the same. Love me an easter egg or a cameo, bit Id be let down and disappointed if Inhad been expecting a crossover.

Same with fusions that are tagged as crossovers. Those fic where someone just replaces all characters in Show A with characters from Show B.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it makes sense to define "we." I mean more like...in fandom and more left-leaning spaces, it's often that anything goes with regards to sex, but speech is very tightly controlled.

And I'm not necessarily saying that all new norms around speech are bad; when it comes to how we speak to one another, it's good to aim for respect. It's just an odd correlation.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Good Omens fandom is rife with this. Yes, Crowley broke down when he thought Aziraphale had been killed, but fandom has both of them becoming overstimulated, going non verbal, needing hugs and reassurance, etc, over the smallest things in fic.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I have only read a small amount of the fic in this fandom and I cannot say I'm at all surprised. It seems like the type of fandom to have the characters react 1000x more dramatically than they do in canon.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-14 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
they really didn't though, i've seen this going around recently with people mourning the lack of filler episodes and i am really wondering if people know what filler episodes are or remember them correctly. filler episodes did not add anything, they didn't flesh out the characters in any way, because if they did that they wouldn't be FILLER. literally those episodes existed just to waste time and i hated them.

i don't care for the 8 episode stuff that's happening on NF and other streaming places, but the 12-13 episodes we got in the 2010's were fantastic because they did away with awful filler episodes and told a good story. the issue is the reduction of overall episode count, not filler episodes leaving. those can stay gone.
