When some people say "I would be," what they mean is "I realistically or most likely would be," and when other people say "I would be," what they actually mean is "my idealized fictional dream self would be"

Neither are wrong, but they're different conversations. Better to figure out which one you're having, first

Yeah, it's not that deep. It's just fun to imagine superpowers.

It's just fun to imagine yourself with super-powers, it's not that deep.

Sometimes a “normal person” would be pretty abnormal in the fiction. Take Psycho-Pass, for instance. It used to be something of an “edgelord” take in the fandom to say you would be an Enforcer in that society, but I think almost any modern-day person transplanted into that setting would either be forced to be an Enforcer or get shot on sight.

(For reference: you can be declared a “latent criminal” and forced to be an Enforcer just because you have enough theory of mind to understand why another person would commit a crime.)

"regular people" are definitely second class citizens in Harry Potter world....

Given the responses I've seen from a lot of people about addicts, the homeless, rioters, etc, I think a lot of people don't have any theory of mind at all... They seem to assume that everyone not like them is an NPC.

Honestly it’s never occurred to me to imagine me as myself. Not only are superpowers fun but it’s also fun to imagine being part of the main group. Another part of if for me is that imagining myself in another universe is also about changing who I am.
Now I’m going to be up all night imagining myself in the X Men’s world lol

Not that I hadn't dreamed of having powers if I was in another world, but I a;ways figured if I was in an isekai or another world, I would be a shopkeeper. Like realistically, I would be working as someone selling the heroes potions and/or armors because I work in that kinda field (selling products, though sadly, not fantasy armors, ha ha) irl and I know for a fact that I would absolutely SUCK as the Chosen One. And I'm okay with that.

Are you also saying "statistically so are you"? Because that's probably where the miscommunication is coming from, like the kill-joyness of that sentiment is impacting how they read "i would be a normal human" most likely.

anyway i wish that Powerless hadn't been cancelled :(

Powerless was great! Nice to see another fan of it.

Powerless!

The only comment I want to make is that I really like the idea of "a day in the life" of just an average person living in the city where superhero shit is going down. What if your apartment was just destroyed? Or the daily annoyances and inconveniences of some havoc caused. or a claims adjuster for the city taking in the damage. Or if you were someone saved by one of the heroes (but you never see them again). Just vignettes.

I think Secret OP isn't taking into account that the hero fantasy is about being special. It's OK to want to feel special and ponder upon one's fantastical superpowers.

IMO I'd rather creativity flourish in fandom than be all, "let's be real about this, no one would be special". It reminds me a lot of the types of fans who point out everything "wrong" in a film/show. "They would actually die from loss of oxygen if they flew up that high, plothole-DING!"

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno. I think the OP raises an interesting point (albeit indirectly). Aside from superpowers, how else could someone be special in these worlds? Heroes almost answered that question but fell short.

I mean, I absolutely agree that ordinary people dealing with the extraordinary can absolutely make for a compelling narrative

But when one fantasizes about being an x-man or what have you is really just about the power fantasy, not whether it would statistically make sense, lol

Fandom: "let's have fun with our imaginations."

You: "no. We need to be realistic all the time, in regards to all things, including fantastical fiction."

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
nah. I'd have laser teeth too
