Yeah, I don't really get people who say they're fans of a show or book or whatever when they're really only fans of one made up relationship between two characters in that media. But we all like different things.

It's not really fair to say that someone who prefers reading/writing shippy fic isn't actually a fan of the show or book itself. Hell, lots of fans of shows and books don't read or write fic at all.

You can be a fan and only like part of something. I'm a fan of scifi but that doesn't mean I like all scifi. I'm a fan of Doctor Who but that doesn't mean I like all the Doctors. I'm a fan of LotR but I skim a lot of the parts that don't interest me.

I'm a fan of basically all versions of Star Trek but when it comes to fic I only care about one source.

I mean, as expanded on below... I'm a fan of the show, but my made-up relationship is the thing that *I can't get from watching the show*. So I read shippy fic because that's the one thing the show I'm a fan of doesn't give me, but the show gives me all the gen plot and worldbuilding, and plenty of ship fics still have serious plot stuff that digs into the world of the show.

I think there's nuance here. Like, I have pieces of media I honestly wouldn't say I'm a fan of, despite shipping the fuck out of a pairing from that media.

Then there's media I would call myself a casual fan of, but I'm also obsessively attached to one particular ship. My overall interest level is moderate, but my interest level in that one ship is sky high.

Then there's media where I consider myself a big fan of it, and I also ship a pairing from it. But that still doesn't mean I want to read fanfic that doesn't feature my OTP. Shipping is the thing that drives me to read and write fanfic. That doesn't mean I don't love the parts of the story that aren't shipping; I just don't love them in a way that makes me want to read or write fanfic about them.

You really think that reading fic about a show is the exclusive meaning of being a fan?

Seriously?
