Speaking as a rarepair writer... no. I write what I write for myself and the few others who actually want the ship or gen theme I'm writing. Why should I care that people whose interests run in completely different directions aren't reading my stuff? I'm not reading theirs either!

For a lot of people “doesn’t have my OTP in it” isn’t the same as “has nothing to interest me”.

Just because pizza is my absolutely favorite food, it doesn’t mean I refuse to have meals that don’t include it.

Yeah, I don't really get people who say they're fans of a show or book or whatever when they're really only fans of one made up relationship between two characters in that media. But we all like different things.

It's not really fair to say that someone who prefers reading/writing shippy fic isn't actually a fan of the show or book itself. Hell, lots of fans of shows and books don't read or write fic at all.

When you write for a small audience, you know you're not gonna get the engagement that someone writing for a bigger audience does. The point of doing it is for the love of it.

Sure, someone who's mainly in it for clout will be disappointed at not getting attention, but they're also most likely not gonna be writing gen or rarepair fic!

For me, gen fic is like nonsexual furry stories. If someone tells me there’s a really interesting furry story, sure, I’ll read it, but I have no particular desire to search for them, and I don’t even know where I would find good ones as opposed to bad ones.

Here's the thing... I have the source material for all the stuff that ISN'T my OTP. I don't need to read gen fic when I have gen show (or gen books, game, movie, etc). When I read and write fic, it's because I want the stuff the show doesn't explore, and YEAH, that usually does mean my ships.

Even when I write fics that are centered on platonic relationships I wish I could have seen explored in canon, my ships are part of it, because if I ship A/B and C/D, and I want to look at what a friendship between B and C looks like, those relationships or those unresolved feelings are still part of the characters' lives *as I write them*.

It's not because I don't think there's good gen fic out there-- it's not even that I make it a point not to read gen fic! In some fandoms, I have.


And, as a rarepair writer... if there's also a more popular ship that I *like*, maybe I write a fic that's about popular A/B and rare C/D and hope that some of the A/B fans come away from it shipping C/D with me. Sometimes I just put my rarepair fics out there with the thought that if *one* other person ships it and finds that fic, then there's two of us, but I couldn't not write the story.

Where have the multishippers gone, and where is all the crack? Where's the fandom bicycle that's always on his back? Isn't there a rare pair or a thruple or some gen? Late at night I search the tags and try to find my zen. I need a fix-it! Or a filk, or a case-fic or three. And it's gotta be long and it's gotta update, and I'd prefer if it was somewhat IC. Rec it to me!

It doesn’t bother me tbh. I write what stories come to me. I share in case someone else out there might enjoy it. And back in the LJ days, I actually hated it when people who weren’t into the ships would engage with me over it cause the point in sharing it in LJ comms was to connect with likeminded fans.

I’m a rarepair writer in a fandom where almost everyone’s OTP is… the main canon ship. Which is a good ship, don’t get me wrong, but most of the fic about it is written in a way that’s a lot more tropey and boring than what’s actually written for us in canon.

Also, no one seems to be interested in multishipping or crack shipping or trying out an interesting idea just to try it.

I guess that’s just the way it is sometimes, but I’m allowed to think it’s boring.

TBH no one has *time* to read anything that isn't their OTP or whatever. No one has *time* these days to try something new, that's just reality. You have a certain amount of time for Ao3, and you're speeding through what's on offer you don't even have time to look at anything that isn't what you were already after.

I'll give you genfic but rarepairs? Nope. You wouldn't tell rarepair shippers who are upset that there is very little content for their rarepair to just get over it and read the popular juggernaut fic for ships they're not interested in to ~give it a chance~ either.

I've started reading more OCxOC fic and I swear to God some of it has rewired my brain. I want fanfiction of this fanfiction. I'll join a discord server dedicated to this fanfiction. OMFG.

But that only happens when I'm more interested in the setting than the individuals.

I'm not sure why you're under the notion that OTP readers aren't also reading GEN fic and rarepairs, just because they're not reading what YOU write doesn't mean they aren't engaging ever. They're just not engaging with you.

I don't write anymore, but when I used to (for rare/crackships even), I did it for myself and the people who liked the ship. Do I wish my rarepair had more media for me to consume? Yes. But alas, it's the life of a rarepair shipper.

What really got me going tho is the fact that the little bit of people who enjoyed my fics where inspired to make their own media as well (be it fanart, fanfic, discussion, etc). So even if it was a tiny small amount of people (or even one person who happens to share your brainrot), the fact that it reached someone is always a nice feeling.

Nowadays I just make it up by looking up the tropes I enjoy on other media and consuming that.
