When you write for a small audience, you know you're not gonna get the engagement that someone writing for a bigger audience does. The point of doing it is for the love of it.

Sure, someone who's mainly in it for clout will be disappointed at not getting attention, but they're also most likely not gonna be writing gen or rarepair fic!
