Racebending rpf seems wildly awkward and weird. I mean I am a person who finds all rpf awkward and weird, but that right there is another level of why.

I find it odd and uncomfortable too. I'm 100% fine with trans headcanons in non rpf. When it comes to rpf, I am generally not a fan, and consider a lot of subject matter that would be fine in non rpf to be "off limits" and fsr trans headcanons fall into that category for me. I don't know if that's fair on my part. I guess I find it rather intrusive since gender identity is a private matter. Plus what you said about it seeming rather fetishistic, in a way that just doesn't bother me with imaginary characters.

+1

You’ve explained this very well and it’s very similar to how I feel. I’m fine with RPF in principle and generally fine with it in practice. But if it feels intrusive, I back button outta there. I do the same with bashing RL family or racebending (non celebs are just off limits for me, and racebending is a whole load of ick on too many levels to list).

With all due respect, if you're worried about anyone crossing the line... I think it was crossed when the RPF was written.

For the record, I'm not bashing anyone for writing or enjoying it. But it seems strange to expect accuracy from one type of fanfiction and not others.

Eh, if you're into RPF you gotta accept you're in that glass house already. No point in worrying about someone making something messy even messier. And I say this as a RPFer.

My gut reaction was that racebending RPF is so weird! Then I remembered I've seen HAMILTON 4 times.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-30 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hamilton is a stage musical about long dead historical figures. It's not written about current celebrities (what if Benedict Cummberbatch was black is a whole different thing) - or worse, celeb's families. RPF has always had people defend it but with boundaries they won't cross; no using actual children; no writing about people currently living; no race bending/trans head canons. It's up to people where they draw the line but each line is valid to someone.

If you're okay with genderbending and different sexual orientations in RPF, then why would making someone trans in RPF be more wrong? Just because someone writes something in a fic does not mean that they believe it to be true (I'm not sure even the tinhattiest of tinhatters generally believe that everything they write in a fic is true). A lot of times fic, especially RPF, is just an exploration of a what-if scenario.

Yeah, I find this line kind of weird. If you're writing RPF and it's not restricted to public and confirmed information (which is rarely is), you've already crossed the line into the "fiction" part of "real person fiction". Also, whatever line you're thinking of, J2 fic is likely to have crossed it a long, long time ago...

I wouldn't be interested in reading it but honestly... not the weirdest thing out there. Imagining 1D as kidnapping children raised the bar pretty high.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-30 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I find stuff like that extremely weird and squicky too, but I'm not sure there's any actual reason-based argument to be made for why it's wrong and any other type of RPF isn't. It feels weirder and more invasive to me, but is it actually? I'm not sure it is.

Well yeah, any "headcanons" about real people are icky, especially with things as private as gender. But it's getting tiresome that when it comes to trans and trans only, y'all always leap to it being a fetish. Sexuality and neurodivergence "headcanons" are rightfully acknowledged as mostly lonely young people with the same identity who desperately want their fave celebs to share that identity. But trans "headcanons" are never given the same grace, which really shows that y'all still think of being trans as both rare and deviant.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-30 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. It's not trans headcanons that are seen as fetishistic, it's the porn. And same sex smut, especially m/m gets hit with the fetish accusations all the damn time.

And neurodivergence headcanons get criticised as well all the time, and lots of times rightfully so.
