Distraction techniques

(Anonymous) 2024-05-06 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I am in so much pain and have already taken the max dose of pain pills. So i am distracting myself with dumb videos amd fandomsecrets.

What is your go-to when you need a distraction from something painful (physical or psychological or anything else)?

I once had a month long anxiety attack. I distracted myself with Horrible Histories skits.

Sometimes I feel like my life is one long anxiety attack with small windows to breath. I'm sorry you had that to deal with, but horrible histories are so much fun so at least you had that!

24 hours a day for 30 or 31 days?
I didn't even know that was possible.

Audiobooks! I can’t look at a screen when I have a headache or it will never go away. And I can’t read because I can’t focus. But having a story read to me is perfect because I focus on what they’re saying and distract myself from the pain. My whole body relaxes to, which helps the meds fight the pain better.

Thats a good call. I'm usually too easily distracted for audiobooks but when I'm in pain I feel like I need something to focus on like a lifeline, so I could see audiobooks being great for that

So sorry you are in so much pain.

When I'm in bad pain I try to watch something that is a favorite of mine and I can escape into. And then I also play some sort of mindless game that I can just get into and play without having to think.

If it is so bad I can't handle watching a screen, I'll just close my eyes, put on an eye mask and ear plugs, and just daydream.

Basically, I just want to go somewhere else, some other world, to get my mind off the pain.

Daydreaming is usualy my answer too. I usually have several daydream fic going and I like to flip from scene to scene as the mood strikes.

Daydreaming works well for me too. I also use it for panic attacks and to fall asleep when I'm having trouble. I have these whole stories created in my head this point that combine all my favorite fandoms.

Oh gosh one of my favorite "bedtime stories" (daydraleaming or mentally writing is how I fall asleep every night) is working out this massive crossover of all my favorite fandoms. It is all the cheesiest tropes that I can indulge in with only my own brain to judge me. But it has to follow some sort of internal logic, so its a fun puzzle to work on.

Yup. At this point I've got the stories all planned out (I've got one main universe with everything in it plus a couple other smaller ones that have more of tropes I really like), I just play through different parts in my head.

Dude, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I feel you, sometimes I just sit in a damn chair waiting for time to pass because the pain is too much. It's not always that way for me, thankfully, but I have worse and better times with my things.

Some stuff that helps a little:
-reading those drama reddits, I get obsessed with outrageously fake AITA posts when I'm having pain issues because they take my mind off it lol
-do something every chance I can, like a tiny bit of a chore, work on my DIY project briefly then go back to sitting in the fcking chair, draw for a short time even if I can't finish, etc... just breaking up the monotony and getting chore/hobby things done a little at a time
-projects with a larger mental component than physical component are lifesavers to me, what I mean by that is stuff like... Planning out how I want to decorate something, how I want to go about doing a new art project (that isn't physically demanding), planning a fun activity to do later when I am up to it and going really in depth on the planning part, idk how to explain. Keeping my mind busy with happy things while my body is tired, I guess. This can also be done by daydreaming or writing fic in your head, if those suit you. Sometimes I imagine AMVs or plan out playlists, lol.
-spend a little time being social when you can, call somebody, chat online, hangout in person if that's an option, post on f!s, message a fandom friend about your OTP, anything! Ignore this if socializing is not something that helps you, IME even when I find it draining and can only talk a small bit, having a bit of social interaction, even anon, makes me feel less alone with the pain.
-let yourself feel your feelings and be patient with when you get overwhelmed, pain SUCKS and sometimes you won't be able to push it away. I try to just let myself have a cry now and again and keep enjoying my small comforts when things are really bad.

Good luck anon <3

Podcasts help me a lot when I need distraction.

a phone call with a family member/friend

as already pointed out, drama that I am no way involved with is great distraction, my favourite for that is lengthy r/HobbyDrama stories. Haven't been there in a while but I really liked the sneaker community drama posts

I hate distracting myself with media because I would actually like to watch/listen/read them. So my usual go are mobile games. Or watching reactors on youtube. I don't want to watch my favorite thing but I like watching people watching my favorite thing
