I didn't get Drarry until I got bored during the pandemic and decided to read some. Then it made complete sense to me. The biggest thing that shifted my perspective was the realization that the majority of Drarry fanfic is set post-series. Opening up the timeline and allowing the characters to grow and become adults and grapple with complex adult realities makes the entire ship so much more impactful and interesting to me than just trying to shoehorn it into the original series timeline.

Not saying you have to get it. Not getting it is valid. Just saying, I didn't get it either, at all, and then I read some fic and was like, "Holy shit, why does this make so much sense??!"

One of my first ships was Harry/Draco XD

One of the comments upthread had it spot on for me in that I began to ship them when I saw Chamber of Secrets. At the time the first 4 books were published so given what we had I thought the mutual enemies thing really good material. I liked the energy between Harry and Draco hating each other with so much passion, the idea of them trying suppress attraction towards each other by disguising it with disdain/hate really appealed to me XD

Teacher/student.

That depends majorly on the context for me. Teacher/student in a school setting? Please no. In a college/university setting? Could work. In a xianxia/fantasy setting (or similar)/something that is more a master/apprentice type deal? I love that.

Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen in MDZS. I don't think they ever interacted directly and it's pretty much a pair the spares situation imo. I also don't see any chemistry at all.

Mona and Scaramouche in Genshin Impact. I think it originated in an event that took place at the very beginning, shortly after the game came out so I missed it but it makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Hux and Rey. Just. Hell no.

Agreed with JC and LXC. They interact maybe 4 or 5 times in canon, and almost all of it is just generic greetings from sect heir to sect heir or sect leader to sect leader. They have no actual character development with each other or about each other, and the practical logistics of a relationship between them are fraught at best. I could see it as a crackship but over 7,000 works? LXC has better chemistry and history and scenes with NMJ and/or JGY. It's very much pair the spares with (most likely) a large dose of one-upmanship from JC fans on Wangxian.

(I've thought about this because JC/LXC keeps showing up in my Wangxian searches.)

JC/LXC doesn't seem impossible to me, but there's so little to work with in canon that you'd have to really build that relationship from scratch yourself. I don't really get the appeal, and it's a wonder to me that it's as popular as it is. Especially in a fandom where there are soooooo many more options that make more sense.

The first time I went into the fandom I was so boggled to see just how popular JC/LXC is, it's not that I think it's especially out-there, I'd expect some people to ship it just because there's always someone to ship something. But for it to be as popular as it is just doesn't make any goddamn sense given how little of anything they have in canon together.

I can understand people not liking the idea of LXC/JGY(I say this as someone who ships it, lol, it's a lot), but for happier stuff NMJ is RIGHT THERE and is actually friends with the guy. It ends sad sure but like that's ever stopped a fandom before? Childhood friends-to-lovers people, what's not to like??

Underage always makes me backbutton if I accidentally stumble on one, and feel creepy.

Not don't understand per-se, but given the sheer popularity of Beefleaf in the fandom I thought their story together would be a lot, well, more than it actually ended up being. They're not even on-page friends all that much, pretty much all of their relationship is off-page and I get that it's makes fanon stuff easier but for me I found the entire groundwork for the ship wholly uninspiring and empty.

It's doesn't help that after [REDACTED] they don't seem to ever see each other again? Not as far as I can tell anyway.

Someone's already said JC/LXC upthread but... yeah, mark another one of us down as utterly baffled by the popularity of that ship over literally anything else in the canon.

Yeah, never was much of a fan of Beefleaf either. Doesn't help that I don't particularly care for SQX. But I also thought the canon was pretty bland for them and fandom just turns them into this vapid OOC thing where a lot of it is just "teehee look at these precious lesbians" and.. Yeah, idk. It's weird.

Bucky/Zemo as a fluffy, romantic pairing.

Is the Bucky/Brock darkfic at least? Or are people shipping that as a healthy relationship?

Anything that involves an underage character, a power imbalance, or a large age difference even if they're both adults (I know it's not actually illegal or anything for a 20 year old to date a 50 year old but I still find it gross).

I personally could never do Draco / Hermione unless it was some kind of HUGE AU because it has gross "you're not like the OTHER X" vibes and just the sheer cruelty with how Draco targeted Hermione and engaged in Death Eater attitudes

Dramione squicks me too, but as a Drarry shipper, I have to assume a lot of the same tenets that apply to Drarry apply to Dramione.

- Most of the fics take place post series, as the characters grow and mature as people and face the complexities of adult reality.

- Draco is probably reformed in many if not most of them. Which I think is valid. Yes he was a complete waste of space in the series, but he was also young, and raised to believe the things he believed and value the things he valued. And ending up under the thumb of a genocidal sadist dictator who lives in your house for two years, seems like the kind of shit that could lead a traumatized eighteen-year-old to reconsider a lot of their underlying dogmas.

- I'm honestly not really sure what Hermione would ever see in him, but I know that in Drarry fic, the fanon tends to be that Draco was in fact a smart, clever, and committed student. Whether or not canon supports that interpretation of the character can definitely be argued; I'm just saying it's pretty consistent Drarry fanon, so it wouldn't surprise me if Draco's academic competence and sharp-mindedness were played up even more in Dramione fanon.

As a twin myself, anything incest or twincest, even if above the age of consent. I get, as an outsider, liking both siblings enough to want both, but them liking each other in that way? Wtf no

Minerva McGonagall/Ron Weasley, not that there are all that many fics, but, you know, I've come across it more than once, which is mind blowing to me. I mean, I do get Teacher/Student pairings, but that professor with that student? No.

Incest, not because I find it squicky or morally wrong in fic, but because it strikes me as too OOC to be believable that most characters (like most people) would feel romantic/sexual about a family member, let alone two reciprocally. Sibling incest also bores me because I don't have any siblings and always wanted one, and turning a canon sibling relationship into a romantic one is turning something I can never have into something I could (except I'm aro, so not really... but technically I could).

One-sided hate pairings. To me it just looks like one person tolerating another person's abuse of them. It's not even sexy, the other person is just fucking mean.
