As someone born in the 1980s, I have always been under the impression that most things were not known by the public at large. Some spaces may have whisper networks so word would get out but at most they were just rumors.

Because if the public knew they'd be repulsed! That's why some stories were filled with smoke and fog.
Like even in the 1990s they tried to keep Aaliyah's age a mystery while the media was filled with rumors about her dating R Kelly.

Bob Dylan dating and abusing young girls. Not surprising but disgusting that I didn't hear anything about that until last year. ='(

It's why Breendoggle was such a huge scandal in the SF community. Walter Breen's behavior had been an open secret for years, but someone finally went to the police. He was convicted and went to prison, and a whole lot of things became public knowledge.
