IRT your comment about kids never hiding their ages: you didn’t because you were in a space designated for children. Children’s spaces were absolutely a thing, pretty much from the earliest days of AOL.

But most of online fandom up through 2012 was either explicitly labeled 18+ or inferred because it was the norm. Teens lied about their ages all the time on LJ and sometimes it was obvious but often it wasn’t because they’d lurk for a long time and then mimic the adults in the comms. Sometimes it wasn’t discovered they’d lied until years later when they’d out themselves. Presumably some were never found out. They’d also lie on angelfire and when signing up for email lists and web rings and geocities. Requiring users to declare they were 18 or older was a CYA so they didn’t have to filter out adult fic, art, and discussions.
