or maybe they could actually have their own art style?

To develop your own style you must emulate others, or so I was taught.

I do try to have my own style, I just like to play around with others and see what I can learn.

...what? have you ever even taken an art class?

all you learn from copying is, well... copying. the good artists learn from life, then develop a style that they're comfortable with.

Why is everyone assuming that I'm just plain old copying? -.- Sorry, it's just starting to irritate me.

Yes, I took one class in college, and it was the best thing I could have done for myself. During that semester my skills got so much better even I couldn't believe it (they suck compared to what I do now, which isn't great but... bleh, it's my hobby).

I study real life now, or try to, with dabblings of drawing fanart on the side. I have a few books that have pictures of real people and I draw from those. My personal favorite is Anatomy for the Artist since it shows what the body looks like below the skin.

because that is kind of exactly what you are saying.

"style to want to emulate drawing with" "that's what I'm teasing through now" "you must emulate others"

it's okay to draw inspiration from others but all of your comments seem to be "just copy everything they do! :D"

really not good advice for a beginner artist.

Well if that's what I'm saying, then I apologize, that's not what I've been meaning to say. (Today's been a bad day for me and words, I apologize.) Sadly that's how I learned to draw, lots of copying then a swift kick in the ass by my art teacher who got me to draw from real life.

You gotta draw the real stuff before you can develop style. Yeah you can copy others all you want, but you won't learn anything. If you already know how to draw realistically, great, then you can mimic other styles (often via fanart) to see what fits your style. Otherwise it's a waste of time.

I don't think [livejournal.com profile] dbzmerciter2005 quite meant it as "copy someone's style and only use that." I take it more to mean that you look into different styles and see what you like and don't like, to expand your own personal. The only sort of comparison I can think of is someone just learning how to cook. In order to improve and develop their own signature dishes, it'd be best for them to test out several different kinds of recipes and ways of cooking to see what works best for them :]

Thank you. That's what I was going for. :) Though it is important to draw from the realistic, it's good to mimic other styles to find what you do and don't like about it and make it your own.
