Re: Question for people who like to read

No one's testing me on it, so I read what interests me. If I don't like the writing style, or I'm not vibing, back to the library it goes and on to the next one. My TBR list at the library has over 200 books on it with more arriving every day, so I can afford to be picky.

Re: Do yall have any family myths/jokes that are passed down?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-19 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
when we were kids, my parents told my sister she came from the cabbage patch and they told me they found me in a trash can and they told my little brother aliens left him on their doorstep.

we have all kinds of family 'memes' and jokes that are based on funny things that we did or that happened to us when we were kids. not sure if anyone would care enough about a list of them all lol.

Yes on middle-aged protagonists. It depends on dark media. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Re: Do you prefer darker or light media?

Yes, big same!

Yeah, I thought S1 of The Knick was extremely good (Bring The Rope in particular really stands out as one of those capital-g Great episodes of television in my mind), but then I didn't watch S2 because I was worried it wouldn't be as good. Which is a dumb thing I do fairly often with shows—stop watching them before they can disappoint me. I really need to give S2 a chance one of these days though. How did you feel about it compared with S1?

*Get The Rope, not Bring The Rope. Knew I should've googled it before hitting post, lol.

It's been some time, but as far as I remember second season was also really good! So give it a chance, but take my word with a grain of salt, I don't exactly remember what things happened in season one and what happened in season two. Well. I do remember the ending, it was something else ahahaha.

This show was so balanced - interesting characters who are not saints but never pure evil. Shittiness of early 20th century medicine, but people were actually trying still. Lovely costumes, I always respect that. Not pulling punches. Damn it was a good show

Also potential spoilers, but abortion plot was *chief kiss*

Re: Question for people who like to read

It’s a little more complex than that if you’re attempting to read and retain a lot of information. It’s a skill set that takes time and practice to build up. If mastered, a person really can read and retain multiple books in a day. I think usually people have to do something else to cement what they’ve taken in, like note taking. I honestly can’t remember.

Okay, but how is someone supposed to figure out this skill set if everything online says it's not actually a real thing? Even you can't remember how it's actually done. Don't get me wrong, I wish it were true because it seems like a really useful skill to have, but I've seen no evidence that it actually is.

I always get a kick out of people thinking it’s a myth because it used to be a common course in college in the 60s. And in the 70s it was trialled as a countermeasure or cure for dyslexia.

No offense, but there are plenty of things that were taught in the 60s and 70s that we now realize were not true or effective.

I recommend Civil War, then. Saw it last week and it sure is gritty/bleak, and Kirsten Dunst is in her 40s.

Thanks for making my secret, secret maker! Excellent picture choice of that terrifying thing!

Ugh, you again. Go away.

Re: Question for people who like to read

I had no idea anyone thought it was impossible. I would guess that’s because there was a time when people liked to make bullshit claims about how many words per minute they could read.

Modern secondary schools and universities still teach it along with other study skills. It’s called chunking and the goal isn’t to read everything that way but rather to use it to pick out the key concepts and points in learning materials. A fifty page chapter in a textbook will probably have only a few pages worth of information necessary to fully understand something.

Do you really inly watch media if you find the stars attractive? That seems so strange to me.

I pirate books first to see if I like them. As I do not spend any money I DNF easily. There's no lost cost or pressure. I buy the books I like. My least fave books are the ones that are too interesting to drop and leave a bad aftertaste. The ones that I should've DNF in hindsight.

What?
I was genuinely speaking about climate/fauna thing and not about geopolitical anything (I guess, judging from your reaction)

I think it's a pretty human response actually, if someone is being unreasonably rude to you or a friend you are under no obligation to ever do what that person wants. It's like being rude to a retail worker: they're not going to help you at all if you're rude to their face and I wouldn't ever fault them for that, they're not paid enough to put up with that kind of bullshit. And the same applies to TV shows: no creator is obligated to play nice with the people actively making the lives of their co-workers much more difficult and presuming otherwise is ascribing a bizarre level of forced grace onto a stranger.

It's pure entitlement to demand that writers cater to a specific subgroup in regards to the narrative of a show, and I don't think anyone behaving that way should ever be rewarded for their bullshit.

I try not to talk to a friend about Bridgerton because they always automatically turn it into some form of virtue signaling for racism. If it's not the characters/show in itself, it's the show runners. If not that, it's the source material. If it's not that, it's the actors. Etc. Etc.

And I appreciate the discussions that have come from all of this, but at what point do you concede that it's problematic and just enjoy the show for what it is for a few days/moments?

I turn to historical romances written by POC authors. I watch historical romances made by POC creators with POC actors.

But I also want to enjoy Bridgerton because it's fluff that is easy for me to enjoy.

Can I live? Can I live?

NAYRT

I get that, but if it's the story they want to tell then it's not about "rewarding" the badly behaving fans.

Okay, that's a different thing than I thought the other person was saying (unless you're the same person). I definitely have heard of that and understand it's an actual method. I also was thinking more about fiction, where I feel like the concept doesn't necessarily work.
