As much as I'm generally indifferent to 'dark and edgy' as a genre, it is my very strong opinion that pretty much everything would be better with middle-aged protagonists. So... hard agree.

I think I mostly agree? I prefer complex, weighty media, especially TV, and that often coincides with narratives which are dark.

With that said, grimdark, nihilistic, everybody-sucks-and-hope-is-naive type narratives do absolutely nothing for me, and IMO they're not nearly as "cool" or "mature" as their fans think they are. A sense of nuance and an acknowledgement of complex realities is always what I'm most hoping to find in a piece of media.

More middle-aged characters would also be nice, I agree.

I can agree on liking dark media. I only give middle aged protagonists a chance if I think they're still good-looking, though. Bowie was fine into his sixties and unto death: most entertainers are not so lucky. And the comparatively lower beauty standards the media imposes on men, combined with their higher likelihood of being protagonists or major characters in the first place, does not amuse me.

It's baffling to me that we can't get any media about 30-somethings or older. The fixation on teenagers is so tiring, I don't get the big deal about that age.

Yes on middle-aged protagonists. It depends on dark media. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I recommend Civil War, then. Saw it last week and it sure is gritty/bleak, and Kirsten Dunst is in her 40s.

I liked it well enough, but I felt it was best as a one season show with maybe a movie that concludes what the eventual series finale did. Season 2 was kind of a drag, honestly.

I do love the hell out of the Nowhere King's song. Creepy as fuck. Same for his character design.

Aww I love that version of Little Princess. (Tbf I love all versions of A Little Princess.) But yes, child Shirley Temple does have a very particular way of doing things and if you don't care for it I'd say just avoid all her movies.

Funny coincidence, but I just went to a used bookstore and randomly picked up a copy of A Little Princess today. I read A Secret Garden for the first time this year and really enjoyed it, so making my way through Francess Hodgson Burnett's other works as I stumbke across them.

Hahaha I never liked any other movies and it was a constant source of disappointment for my mother when I was little. She idolized Shirley Temple when she was little and in her mind it was a huge failing in my part that I wasn’t exactly the same.

I love the picture for this secret, LOL.

But yeah, finding ways to filter out fandom drama and nonsense really does help make things so much easier. I often tend to just find a small handful of people to talk to, and I stay in my little corner, and that's that. It's a system that hasn't failed me yet.
